Orlando airport closing down Sunday night

Wow! And you with three kids in the car!! :charac2:
No it was just DH and I. We were married 11 years ago but never had a honeymoon so this was it.

Our cruise got rerouted to a Western, DH was given a dessert our last night that must have had a tree nut in it and immediately swelled up (inhaler, benadryl the whole 9 yards - luckily he’s not anaphylactic). Then at 5AM we found out our flight had been canceled when the Fantasy docked 😅

Thank goodness the kids weren’t with us. We are glad to be home, but already planning our next Aug adventure in Florida 🤣

Just got off the Fantasy 1/2 hr ago to find our flight for tomorrow canceled. Rented a car to drive back to Canada and make it home for work. First flight out we were offered was Sept 4th. Wish us luck (haven’t had much this trip so far 😬).

That’s nuts. We were at Animal Kingdom Lodge last week and flew home from Orlando to Toronto yesterday. At no point did WestJet even hint at cancelling any flights.

Was your flight cancelled due to the weather? Or for other reasons? Because the weather was great on Sunday...

Yup. Spirit flights going into MCO have continuing service to San Juan. I assume they were concerned about their bottom line and not their customers’ safety - ie they stopped sending planes to MCO because those planes couldn’t continue on to San Juan = no planes to take us back to Detroit.

They wouldn't change your flight to fly out of Atlanta or Charlotte?

And how are you renting a car in the U.S. to return in Canada? (I'd love to do a one-way rental and fly the other way) Also, was there an upcharge for returning elsewhere?

We did a one way from NY to Quebec City last September to meet the Disney Magic. It left Quebec and hit a few Canadian ports and then ended in New York where we live. We did a one way rental of a minivan. I priced it out through many different agencies.

Not the OP but we have rented a car in the US and driven one way to Canada (did the DCL cruise from Quebec City to NYC).
We did the one way rental with Enterprise.
The AAA clerk told us that was not allowed, Enterprise said it is done all the time.

The drop off fee was kind of steep but it was cheaper and more flexible than flying.

We did get a a certificate from our auto insurance guy saying that we were covered in case of accident or incident while driving in Canada.
We had our auto rental agreement and cruise documents ready for the border crossing but were not asked for anything other than our passports and just waved through.

Good luck with that long drive OP!

We also rented a van one way from NY to Quebec last year for the Magic sailing!! We did the rental through Avis. We picked up the car at Newark airport as it was much cheaper than our local Avis agency and I wanted to make sure they had a minivan available. We returned to one of the hotels in Quebec...I think the Hilton.
