Organizing 101/ May - Attic

Attic

Goal
Create organized storage space before the weather gets to hot

Treat
New storage boxes

Declutter
- Sort your stuff by category (clothes, decorations, etc..) Start separate piles for things that will be donated, repaired, or discarded.
- make piles for older children of childhood memorabilia and items you are willing to part with. Invite them over to take what they want, then donate or toss the rest.
-Check for water damage or evidence of pest or rodent infestation.

Clean
- Vacuum and clean floor, baseboards, windows, and walls
- Call exterminator if necessary to get rid of bugs and rodents.
- Close up any holes in the walls, roof, windows, or eaves
- Clean windows, checking screens, glass, and caulking for any cracks or holes

Maintain
-Install rods for hanging clothes and breathable garment bags
- Make an inventory list of any items you store in containers. Clearly label and number the outside with a title ("Christmas Decoratios #1 of 4, "School Projects", "Grades 1-3")
- Designate separate storage areas for each category and draw a map to keep handy with your inventory sheets. Keep them in a 3 ring binder or on plastic sheet protectors neat the attic entrance for easy retrieval.
- schedule repair and pest - eradication appointments
- put everything back in its place once you've retrieved it for seasonal or special-occasional use.

Well, I'm done for the month! Woo hoo.. All in one day... I cleaned my basement from top to bottom.. and now the attic..

Well, the attic is DH's domain...and he and FIL cleaned it (the only thing up there is storage boxes for the holiday decorations and the fans for the summer)...so that is done!

Phew - another month I don't have to worry about. This will give me time to catch up on my miserable failures for February and March. I still have my lists printed out from those months - I move them around from pile to pile in my office. Maybe someday I will be organized. Yeah, right.

Technically we do have a crawlspace up there, we just keep nothing in it. I will give DH the task this month of going up there and checking for leaks, etc. We should do that more often but it's such a hassle to get up there neither of us bothers.

I pass on this one...not even going to try or feel guilty about it. The kids and DH do the attic. I'm scared of the pull down steps, and I refuse to go further than 1/2 way up... My DH is born organized anyway, so peeking up there shows that things are painfully organized, labeled, and straight.

My attic is empty, no need to clean. What I don't see, I don't know about. I've never been up there and never will! I'm with you, ddavis, I'm not even going to feel guilty about it.

Guess I'll go play with my cricut. Yes, that is a deliberate prod to see how many times we can get Buffy to say bite me in one thread.

We don't even have an attic that could store items in it. The trusses are not spaced for it. The only thing up there is the AC unit and blown insulation.

Technically I don't have an Attic but we have a loft over our garage so I guess we have an attic, kind of.

No attic for me either. At home, we have a crawl space that empty flattened shipping boxes are stored in, by size and at my BF's we don't have any space (condo)

I would much rather play with the Cricut. But if I leave DH to clean the loft I would either come home to the stuff in the same place or come home to the wrong stuff being tossed out.

Awww darn it Buffy! We just had our attic converted (board and electric lights put up there) so we can use it. Why couldn't ya have done this one in March??? Anyway no way in heck am I going up there, lights or no lights! I'll take charge of handing the boxes up to OH.

PS, don't let my mom see this thread, her attic is a great extra storage room for me and my sister!!!
