Ours took about 10 days to come when we ordered ours last year. I linked it to my credit card immediately. Since we typically go twice a year, it seemed like a no-brainer to get the transponder. So nice not worrying about tolls now. We also just use the app and add our rental car when we are loading up at the airport. Its so easy

Wanted to update in case anyone else was wondering: I ordered my portable transponder on February 16, and it arrived today, February 21. Monday was a holiday, so that was really fast!

We are renting a car to go from MCO to WDW to Port back to MCO. Never rented a car before.

Just to clarify...I can still pay in cash at the tolls? I know the rental car company has some toll plate thing, but it's expensive.

1. Is your 10 yoa Sunpass the one that beeps and has a battery? If so FL wants to give you a new one for free - the one you have is being 'retired' and will stop working in a few months. See

2. Registering the rental car plate (which just takes a minute to do) provides the 'backup' in case the transponder fails to work for some reason. The system first tries to read the transponder. If this fails the tag is captured. The tag is first checked against the SunPass file - if the tag appears there, the associated SunPass account is charged. Next a set of corporate accounts is checked and if the tag is there the appropriate account is charged; this is things like trucking companies, government vehicles and rental cars. Then, depending on the area either the registered owner gets a monthly bill (in cashless areas) or a fine for failing to pay.

Actually, if your tag (or that of your rental) is listed in your Sunpass account, you don't even need the Sunpass in the car .... I've forgotten mine several times and the charges show up on the account just as if I did have it. Daughter had a dead battery in her old model for a year, but all charges still went to the account . . . {"hey dad, did I ever mention my Sunpass thingy doesn't beep anymore . . ."}

Yes, you can still pay cash from MCO to Disney World.

Thanks for the suggestion We go every year and rent a car, so I needed the portable kind. After our last trip when my husband accidentally missed a toll booth on our way to the resort from the airport and then our GPS led us astray when going to a volleyball tournament causing us to go through a cashless toll, we decided this would save us stress, time, and money! (We ended up paying way more than the cost of two tolls to the rental car company.)

Yes. And it's not a coincidence that you "missed" a toll at the airport. The car rental agencies, I believe, are running a scam. They know when you are leaving the airport, (it's basically the only time they can know when & where you might definitely be going through a toll. Keep this in mind, bc it's relevant.) and they send you a notice after the fact saying you missed a toll leaving the airport & they bill you. Since you can't get a toll receipt (coins only) you can't prove you paid. Even if you did. And they get away with scamming a bit more money out of you. They did this to us & we KNOW we paid. We asked for proof from them & they refused to provide the bill/ticket. They can't know where in FL you are at any other time on your trip & could get caught lying if they try to say you missed a toll in Miami when you have proof you were in Orlando, for example. BUT...at the airport, they can get you bc they time stamp when you leave their lot. I'll bet MANY MANY people "missed a toll" at the airport only. Which is why a sunpass of your own is critical if you don't want to be scammed. Sure, they offer you a sunpass add-on. For much more money than you would pay on your own. Get a portable sunpass & bring it with you on your trips. **Make sure you input your car rental license plate onto your account the second you know it & before you leave the airport so you have proof that the car you drove that day paid the toll. I'm guessing this person has learned their lesson by now, considering the incident happened 3.5 years ago. Sheesh.
