Ordering of kids menu @ Blue Bayou

Looks like it's a no on the BB appetizer menu. Just the starters that come with entrees (soup, gumbo or an upgrade to a shrimp cocktail).

That's what I saw too. Thanks for checking though. I was hoping it may have been a cheaper way to go.

I'm wondering what the adult price is when ordering off the kids menu? What do they charge you for the double portion? (which kind of defeats why I might order from the kids menu- for smaller portions;)

My DD college aged now, also orders from the kids menus frequently at WDW- It has never been a problem. I hope it will not be at DL. :)

You can always just order sides. I did this years ago. We wanted to go but being a non-meat eater (& non-fungus eater) there was nothing on the menu that I would enjoy. I LOVED the blue bayou potatoes .

At table service, it's twice the portion for twice the price. People have reported asking for the child size portion, but agreeing to pay the adult price. At counter service you can order off the kid's menu, and pay the kid's price for the kid's portion.

Is Blue Bayou strict on the age of kid that can order off the kid's menu?

I read the menu online somewhere and thought I remembered reading that it was for kids up to age 9. Would they charge more if my 12 year old son ordered from the kid's menu? He orders mac-n-cheese at every restaurant we go to! :)

My DS 11 is exactly the same - mac n cheese all the way!

We just returned from DL and we found the children's portions okay for DS3 and too small for DS9. For example, the burgers were small slider size and the Mac n cheese portion was smaller than a Motts apple sauce container.

Thanks for the input - what a great response!

I think a double portion kids choice would be appropriate for my 12 and 13-yo boys. Better $18 an entree for the kids than $33!

In my opinion the split plate charge is a rip-off, as essentially all you are getting is an extra salad or cup of soup for $12 (is split charge same for lunch and dinner?

Seems a good strategy is going for the Monte Cristo - easy to split in half. Then the hungrier person takes the salad/soup.

A family of four could get out of there for about $26+$18+$18+4x3.50 = $76 + $14 tip = $90. Whew, that's still a pretty pricey lunch! But to try to do it cheaper, I would feel guilty as then you are really pushing the envelope and taking tables from more deserving paying customers in my opinion. It's all about supply and demand at the BB though.

However with those astronomical prices, I would venture to say atleast 1 out of 3 tables is using these cost saving techniques. I'm sure the servers have "seen it all."

I've not tried ordering from the kid's menu, but just out of curiosity, where did you get the $18 from?

It is pricey, but you also get two portions of the sides. Essentially, each person get their own appetizer and sides, with only the main part of the entree being split. Yes, I believe the split plate fee is the same at both meals.

I believe the person is thinking that they will double the portion, double the price; so $9 for a kids, doubled = $18. That said, I always thought they'd serve an entree off the kids' menu, at an adult size & adult price. I honestly don't know which way it's done, since we've never tried it.

That's what I thought s/he might be thinking. I'd read on another thread that in 2012, the "adult price" for the mac and cheese was $20, which had to more than double the price at the time. I would guess that it's gone up a few dollars by now...

Yes, the bottom line is, if the patron is over 9-yo they are suppose to only offer a double portion kids meal at double the price. Mac n Cheese for example is $8.49 So the non-child double portion would be $16.98 or roughly about half the price of most the main entrees on the menu.

The Monte Cristo Sandwich is the cheapest non-kids choice at $26.95 currently and most people say it is plenty filling enough to split/share. For those that are very frugal it is wiser to just share the sandwich rather than pay the $12 split charge which only gets you one salad or cup of gumbo.

So you can figure a family of 4 will shell out around $90 for lunch (including tip) if the adults share the Monte Cristo and the kids are over 9 and get the double portion kids meals.

Here's the menu:

Disney now has "Mickey Check" kids meals which is an indicator for dumb parents with fat children what's the healthiest things on the menu. Personally, I might order a double portion of the Salmon for myself as opposed to the Monte Cristo and get a healthier meal and save $9.

I'm not entirely sure that's how it works though. In this thread alone it's been said it may be double the portion for double the price, but it's also been an adult portion of food for the adult price. I think you have to go in expecting to pay the adult price and be pleasantly surprised if it's just double the price.

Is there anything on the adult menu they'd agree to share? I think that's your cheapest option. And just tell them they'll share and you don't pay the split plate charge (but they then share the salad/gumbo and sides).

Also, they won't allow you to order the kids salmon at the kids price, since they offer that on the adult menu (at $33).

I think some people are just interchanging the term 'double portion' with 'adult portion' and 'double price' with 'adult price' otherwise they would be charging unpublished prices. The server may describe it as an 'adult portion' which would be why people use that term too, when in actuality it's essentially double the kids portion.

You're right on the salmon, I forgot it was also on the Adult menu.

I wonder what the do regarding the included beverage on a double size (adult portion) kids meal? Give you two of them?

I doubt it. I would guess you just get the normal child's drink. I think you're only getting "double" or an "adult" portion of the main entree.

Given that you don't sound happy with the prices at BB and you're thinking of just getting your kids the Monte Cristo, you could also go to Cafe Orleans. It has the Monte Cristo as well and the overall prices are less.

Also, they won't allow you to order the kids salmon at the kids price, since they offer that on the adult menu (at $33).

On that same note, the strip loin is also on the adult lunch menu ($38). There is a chicken dish as well, but it sounds fairly different.

No, you also get extra sides as well. Each person gets the soup/salad, the entree and the sides that are served with the entree, so you're getting more then just an extra soup or salad.

traditionally when we have ordered for our kids off the children's menu we have been served at the "double/double" rate, double the serving of food for double the price. DD17 can be very picky so she does order this way at BB and CO both, it's never been a problem and it's always been "double/double".

Yes, "adult portion" would be different and would be served with the sides, you need to specify that you're ordering with the "double/double" "rule". lol That was how the restaurant CM's explained it to me. And when ordering that way it's always nice to be polite to the CM when inquiring, they are much more inclined to help you if you're being polite about it. :) Also, if you ordered 1 entree to share for the kids you may have room after for dessert, not necessarily at the BB but there are plenty of tasty places to have desserts in the parks. :)

I was looking for an answer to the question "What is a Mickey Check" meal.

Wow. Now I know.

FYI, a few months ago at Carnation I asked about ordering off the kids menu for a 15 year old and was told yes, for twice the price, but not Mickey Check meals.

Which is kind of a shame, because I think the PBJ might have been better than what I ate.

Since I have an adult child who is autistic and has food issues (texture) we have done this numerous times. It is double portion at double price. However, it won't include the price of the drink, you pay for an adult drink.

I'm glad an adult can order off the kids menu. My fiance DOES NOT do fancy foods and I totally do. I've always wanted to eat at BB and whenever we take our first trip together down there (he's never been to Disney EVER, so he doesn't get my obcesssion, lol) I'd like to eat here. No matter where I eat though I worry he won't like anything on the menu and just knowing an adult can order the "plain" food is perfect:) Thanks for the info!
