Ordering food items off Etsy

I'm planning my son's 1st birthday party and of course its going to be a Mickey Mouse party. I've found some really cute custom invitations online and a banner and table centerpiece and lots of other cool things on Etsy.

My question is, I also saw some really cute Mickey Mouse Rice Krispie treats on there. Has anyone ordered edible things off somewhere like this? Maybe I'm just paranoid but it makes me a little nervous. What do you guys think?

Okay, well I just don't have time to make them myself. I work full time, we're leaving on vacation the next week, DD has a dance recital the week before and its just a crazy busy time for us. So I can't make them myself. And I'm the most uncrafty person ever so even if I had time they would be horrible.

So, that being said. Does anyone have experience with ordering something like this online? Or know anywhere to order something like this?

thanks!

I wouldn't order food from Etsy just because you don't know how clean the person is. They may have 20 cats that like to jump on the kitchen counter for all you know. Maybe you could commision a professional baker to make them. They are super simple to make and you know a professional is required by law to be hygenic.

That's what worried me is just not knowing who you're getting it from. I actually found a friend/aquaintance through ebay that makes custom cookies and I sent her a message to see what she could do for me. Cookies would be cute too.

Rice krispie treats just make me think of Disney.....

Chck their feedback first but they do have to keep their baking areas up to code like any bakery would. You cant just decide to sell food online. They habe to meet some criteria :). And yes i have gotten desserts on etsy before :)

Food is something I would never order from ETSY. I have the same "how clean is this person's kitchen" syndrome. Even at work, when we do pot luck, I get grossed out. I see some of my coworkers work spaces and think that, if their kitchen is anything like their work space ... ewwwwwww!!!!!

The difference is some one from Etsy would hopefully keep their kitchen clean but you never know. Etsy feedback isn't going to tell you if the person have bugs or rodents or what. A professional could have an inspector come in at any time so they have to keep things clean.

most states require that anyone selling food whether out of their home or in a professional kitchen have inspections done. I would read the sellers policies as well as their shop announcement to see what it says about such things.

I suppose some people would be doing this without following the rules but anyone with a decent amount of sales should be following state regulations and most of those require regular inspections.

also it never hurts to contact the seller to ask about compliance with state regulations and they should be able to prove it.

It's for a FIRST birthday party. Why take a chance for cute? :confused3

Well he probably wouldn't really get to eat any of it anyway. He'll have some of his cake and that's probably more than enough sugar/sweets for a 1 year old. But he won't be the only one at the party.

I would not buy food from a random person on the internet. There is no guarantee that they are adhering to the standards for bakeries.

Ha. True story. My dad dated a woman who was a professional cake/cookie baker. She was always making us gift baskets of cookies. She did this out of her home. My dad was finally invited over to eat dinner. There were about 6 cats in her house. Don't get me wrong, I like cats. But cats and baking for a living in your house, don't mix. After that, I could never eat anything else she made. After that, my dad stopped seeing her. There were other reasons, but that was the nail in the coffin.
