So I went to a new stylist last night. I have sort of "dirty blond" hair and I just wanted it brightened up. She showed me multiple pictures of hair colors. I had a feeling things weren't going as I planned. When the dye was ready to be washed off she said "You got yellow.". (internal freak out followed, lol) so she said she would apply a glaze. After the glaze, I heard "hmmmmm I'm going to apply a toner to calm it down". (another freak out... And started recalling the Brady Bunch episode with Greg and the rabbits with orange hair) After that I finally saw myself in the mirror. Omg. It's orange. I said It's really red! She said, You think it looks red?! Next came another round of toner. She then blow dried my carrot top. She attempted to try to put me under 3 different lights. Then she said to sleep on it and the next day if I still didn't like it to come back. I HATE it! It is orange. It is not a good color for me. (is it for anyone??) It makes my skin color look "off".

You know you are having a bad day when the first thing you do when you wake up is google How To Fix Orange Hair.

I am going back after work and a senior stylist will try to fix it. I'm just wondering if you've had this lovely experience, how did you fix it? Any stylists here that can advise me on what to ask of the senior stylist?

Thanks for any advice!!!!

It is too late, but I think I would have consulted with the senior stylist before I left the salon. I would at least ask if it is normal policy to have a disaster walk out of the salon without being referred to someone who might have a better solution before more damage is done.

Wow, orange. I hated my color once as I thought it too brash. I just called and went in for repair-no charge. My salon doesn't have new people do color without a senior person monitoring each step. Why would this salon turn a new person loose with color on someone who had never had color? The idea is to start with small changes-like a weave of two or three colors similar to what you already have. Did she really just put one solid color all over your head?

I got out if there at 9:40 pm. By the time she "finished" with me there was only her and the receptionist left. Uuggghhh.

I have heard from other people that I could possibly go over it w a medium brown or something. No?

Maybe I should clarify, she was new to me, but not a completely new stylist. And yes, I'm going for a "repair" later, no charge. I hope it works. As my DD15 said, though, Well at least it's close to St Pattys day!

Call the salon. Tell them you are unhappy with it and ask for a more experienced stylist to fix it. My hairdresser, of many years, tried something new, which I hated. It was very different from my usual, so he told me same thing, "sleep on it, get another opinion, if you still don't like it I'll fix it." Of course, my husband (who has NO hair at all) said it looked fine, but I HATED it. I called, the next day he fit me in and "fixed" it for free.

Do NOT try to fix it yourself. You have had a lot of chemical processes on your hair, there is no telling what might happen if you try an at home fix.

That is unfortunate that there was nobody left to consult.

Did you start out with unprocessed hair?

Do not do anything yourself. It would seem, to me, that this stylist was not very well versed in the 'coloring process'. She should have been able to look at your hair and know, beforehand, what would happen with various different color choices!!
Had you processed your hair before?? Doesn't sound like it, but not sure. So, go back, have a senior stylist fix it. I would most certainly check with the salon manager about the senior stylists coloring abilities.

Your DH is like mine! He said I love you, you are beautiful! If somehow I was turned into an actual donkey, with a tail, kicking up my hind legs, and braying... He would still say he loves me and that he thinks I'm beautiful. Lol.

I don't know if you WANT brown over it, but I just dyed my red/orange hair a dark chocolate brown color and it looks pretty good. My hair before was actually bleached and then dyed the orangey red color, and my natural color is a dark dark brown. They got it to look OK (my roots are still a bit darker). The orange shines through, but I like the way it looks.

However, if you have lighter hair, keeping up with a darker color might be some work. I was just trying to get mine back as close to natural because I was tired of the upkeep.

The one time I got orange hair was when I was too impatient after a perm to color the grey hair - did a home hair color - and yep, orange...

I called the Clairol Hotline 800# (it was clairol I believe)

they gave me the formula to go to Sally Hair salon and to put an "ash" color on it (it was a #20 developer - 2 ounces + the ash color liquid) I do remember getting compliments on my "highlights" :rotfl2:

so glad perms are no longer in style!

and I now color my hair with Sally Hair Salon Products!

and I've not done orange ever again!

In your case, since it wasnt a home hair disaster - then it is up to the Salon to make it right!

good luck!

aawww sweetie, I'm sorry

and Yes, I had the same thing happen to me once.

I went in for a color fill and came out like carrot top. I was in tears by the time I left and it was awful. My family was at home waiting for me to go to dinner out of town, it was so bad, I actually put my hair in a bun and wore a scarf over my head :( And the "cut" she gave was just as terrible too, major hack job.

My girl, said many things like your's "wow, it turned" She too put like 3 toners on it. She was fixated on a few lil strands while I'm in the chair like "HELLO, what about the rest of my ENTIRE head ! "

I was painfully ackward, because by the end of almost 4 hours, all the other appts were done, and it was just she, the recptionist and I, and the receptioninst ended up leaving to go make a bank deposit

I walked to the car in tears, called my DH and told him to get out the clippers for when I got home.

I called back the next business day and left a message for the owner, that was another major screw up because they kept calling the wrong number. I'd call back and say I never heard from you and they kept saying yes, we called you, and I kept saying no, you didn't ! I was so dreafully awful and I had to go to work like that for 3 days until they could cut the B/S and call me at the right number

There was nothing that could be done as far as correcting the blonde, I had no choice but cover it with a dark chocolate brown and get carmel highlights. It was OK, but it def was NOT what I wanted. Oh and I had to get about another 4 inches taken off due to her hack job hair cut :(

Sounds like you've got it under control.

My stylist and I were just giggling about terminology a few days ago. According to her, glaze and toner are the same basic thing; one just has a fancier name. I hope it works out OK when you go back.

One thing I will tell you from my redhead era. I love me as a redhead, but the color doesn't last at all. I finally gave up on it. So...if worse comes to worse, the orange probably will fade out quickly.

That said, the salon needs to make it happen NOW, eh? Best of luck.

We did DD's hair at home once, she wanted to go from blonde to red. It turned out exactly like Ariel's red, I kid you not. Which now she would probably like, but she was 16 at the time and a ballerina!

We went the route of getting the color stripped and redone, and she wound up with a pale strawberry blonde.

She now does her hair herself, and has been trying to get that Ariel red as an "accent" piece near the front. It keeps turning orange. But after she washes it a few times it winds up more of a pink and looks pretty good on her!

So if you don't want a lot more chemicals on your hair, you could just wash it every day for a while, it will probably be much lighter in a week or two.

My naturally dark blonde hair turned fuchsia in a home attempt to go strawberry blonde. Yeah. Not a good look for me. We used the Clairol color remover which left me with orange hair. It was actually worse than the fuchsia. I had to go to work with orange hair for a couple of days. It was awful. Luckily a fellow teacher is a self-proclaimed "beauty-school dropout" who made it through the coloring lessons, and told me to try coloring it with an ash blonde to cancel the red tones. Sure enough, it worked. I haven't colored my hair since, and probably won't ever again. I think I was traumatized!

Since your disaster was at a salon, they should fix it for you...it's just the waiting to get in again that is awful.

I believe you're doing the right thing by returning to the salon - then requesting a senior stylist.

I hope everything is better today. You need this...:grouphug:

Thanks to everyone for your kindness and the stories of your own hair disasters!

I did go back and saw the senior stylist. What he did was give me highlights and then put a cooler blond as the base color. The result is pretty good. There is still a warm tone to it but it looks more blond, and I can definitely live with it.

Thanks again!
