Options to DAS

They have removed a lot of benches over the last 5 or 6 years.

Don't know how people are seeing less seating in the parks. MK alone has added a bunch of seating at the new bathrooms near HM. While there may not always be benches Disney has made wall for sitting. We go to the parks 4 or more times a week.

All I see is people not accepting change. Rusty is right, Disney is a business. It's not a right, or a necessity, or frankly the handicap wonderland people seem to expect.

They are still ahead of the curve when it comes to disability accommodations but it seems like everyone is forgetting is the business aspect. Legally they are providing what NEEDS to be provided. Disney doesn't have to bend to the will of a guest who rejects an appropriate solution out of pride or cost or spite. If you don't like it, don't go.

The reason I thought it was sad that they removed so many of the places to sit is because people need a place to sit down and it would be nice for them to have these places. Between the walking and the standing its nice to just sit down once in awhile.

I do understand that Disney is a business. I'm sorry, I just had chemo today and its really hard to hold a thought let alone put it in writing.

This is getting off on a tangent and an argument about whether there are less benches. I think that has been argued to death, so let's agree that some people are able to find benches and others feel there are too few.

I'm not familiar with the post you read, but just to clarify WDW does not allow guests to bring seats into the parks. Rollators (a walker with a seat) and canes that open out to a little seat are considered mobility aides and are allowed. But other folding or travel seats are not.

You are correct...needs vary greatly but there are many things people can do to help their own situation in the parks without relying solely on accommodations. Staying hydrated and taking breaks are two that can help most anyone regardless of their situation.

Enjoy your vacation!

So...my DH, who has been diagnosed with bursitis in both hips and cannot stand for long periods of time, wouldn't be allowed to bring a folding hiking stool in a backpack into the parks at WDW?

That kind of folding seat would not be allowed.
Some of the reason why include:
- most lines actually don't come to a stop, they keep moving along very slowly. So having a seat that needs to keep being moved along or folded/unfolded becomes an issue.

- the seat would need to be folded up at the boarding area, and then what happens to it? Do you take it on the attractions with you?

- in the case of an emergency evacuation, the seat could become a barrier to getting people out quickly.

There are 2 types of seats people have reported being able to bring in.
The first type is a cane, with a fold down seat. Because it is a cane, it is first of all, a mobility device. A cane can be helpful for people who find it painful to stand or walk because it's possible to take some weight off one hip/foot/knee at a time by leaning on the cane.
Most of those seats are easily and very quickly flipped up or down. And, the cane is either small enough to go on attractions with you or be leaned against the wall where wheelchairs are stored during rides.

The second is a kind of walker called a rollator. They are rolling walkers and have a fold down seat. So, the person can choose to use them for support when walking or fold down the seat to sit. Because they have wheels, I've even seen people walking along with them using their feet to propel themselves while seated.
Those would be left with wheelchairs on the attractions. 10 years ago, nobody was using them, but they are common enough now that we see several people with them every day.

His other choices would be a wheelchair or ECV. Some people use them to get from place to place and only bring them into line for attractions where there will be a long wait.

The cane with a fold-down seat might be an even better option. I'll run it by him. Thank you!
