I have a TOM TOM Sat Nav at home, if I take it to Florida will it work there with no problems? I realise I will have to buy a map, but that's no problem.

The other option is to hire one there from the car hire company

What are your opinions?

Kevin I looked into hiring a Tom Tom for two weeks in December and it costs £75!

Wayne recommended that I consider buying one from Walmart when I get there as it would cost around the same and I get to keep it for future trips.

I'm not 100% sure but I think the one you've got should work with a new map....someone else will no doubt be able to confirm this.

I have TomTom on my PDA, used it in Florida, Vegas, Los Angeles, San Diego. Can't fault it. I have been entering Favourites for our next trip, we leave Friday, 1st day driving upto Savannah & Tybee Island areas about 5 hours drive.
Renting is v expensive if you have your own, most people either take their own or by one in Walmart, similar cost to 2 weeks rental.

Hubby uses TomTom now (did use Mapopilis thing before but they gone defunkt I think) and he has it on his PDA and it's way better than the old one!

Guy at his work just back from WDW and he used the same version on a separate unit - he found it confusing, but he was trying to use it to navigate round WDW itself and not really used it much "on the open road" so to speak as they were just across the road from WDW pretty much! He reckoned better off using the WDW signs once you actually get onto the WDW road system as he kept getting lost whenever he used the TomTom but other than that couldn't fault it.

The Tom Tom should work - they are doing a deal with £10 off the full North American map at the moment.

DONT hire a Tom Tom with the car.

I had been there a few days and happened to read the small print on the separtae agreement I had to sigh (Dollar). It said the Insurance on the car didnt cover it and we would be responsilble for any loss or damage - a flat figure of $250 I think.

needless to say it then spent the rest of the holiday in the room safe or deep in our back pack - not enjoyable.

Then to compound it we had to go back into the hire desk, queue up and hand the thing back in as they wont take em when you hand the car over.

Your Tom Tom One will work fine over there, you just need the US maps. We have used ours over there for the past 4 years, it makes it so much easier especially when finding specific places.

I'd buy the US southeast map from here, £25.00.

SD card if you need one from play.com.

Load the Florida POI from here, at the bottom of the page.

We used our tom tom one earlier this year with US maps. had no problems except it tried to send us into a restricted area of the kennedy space center :scared1:

Like Wayne I have TomTom on my PDA, when I used it for the first time out there last may we went to EPCOT the first day and it send us to the CM entrance! From then on we just turned it off as soon as we were "on property".

rember if entering zip/post codes for over there, they cover a wider area than over here

:rotfl2: Never used mine on property. there are great signs around:goodvibes

I haven't got a clue how to load the maps onto an SD card and get it working ! Any instructions?

Not sure how it works on a TT unit but on my PDA I copy the map required to either the micro SD card or the device itself and then within the application there is an option to "switch maps" whereby you browse for your newly installed maps - I'm sure if you purchase the map it will come with version dependant instructions.
HTH.

Yes, as in my original post I already own one.

I am now looking where to buy a physical card with the map on, then I can either reuse it in the future or sell it on eBay.

In the end i havent bothered with the Sd card.

TomTom home stores each map on the PC hard drive and there is an option to take the Europe map off and put the NA one on.

I will then switch them back when we get back to the UK.

I checked my PC and a copy of both maps stays on the PC as backup anyway.

I have just purchased a Tom Tom SD card with the whole of the states on it for £40.

Will use it on the trip, then sell it.
