Options for traveling to Universal from Disney

Hi All

I am new to the DIS boards

We are booked at a Disney resort from Jan 4 to the Jan 11.
We are arriving by plane and will not have a rental car
We want to go to Universal for a day and I am wondering if anybody has suggestions or has done this same thing and done it seamlessly???

Obviously there is cabs and I assume public transit too. I am interested in costs and best places to perhaps catch a cab or bus if we do that?

$18 a person? ouch. Depending on how many people you have maybe renting a car is not a bad idea. If you are staying onsite at Disney don't you park free at the Disney resorts/theme parks? Your transportation to and from the parks would be a lot quicker saving time not dealing with waiting for bus/monorail but also you could go offsite to eat/shop/buy groceries and save money that way as well. We've rented cars for as low as $150 for week through using orbitz or comparable website. Just something to think about.

Have you used "Mears" and do they pick you up at the hotel?

In case you don't know, Mears Transportation is a huge, well-respected company that has partnered with Disney for many years. Mears actually runs Disney's Magical Express service from MCO to the resorts. They also run the bus service from the Disney Springs hotels to the parks.

I've never used them for transfers from Disney to Universal, so I can't help with that question.

We were just there a couple of weeks ago and took a taxi. It was about $35 each way plus tip which is a little steep but we figured it was about the same as renting a car would have been and we didn't have to pay for gas or parking and try and figure out how to get there. We had 4 people and just felt the convenience factor was worth it.

Universal has a ticket that includes transportation from any disney area resort (including offsite). If your only a couple people that might be the most cost effective way to go.

I have never used Uber, but we already know that if we do have to use them that there are always codes for $15-18 off for the 1st time you use them. So in essence if there are two adults that could be nearly two free rides, not including tip. Just download uber app on your phone and sign up. Retailmenot app always list discount codes and you will get emails too
