My DS is almost 3 (will be in May). The past two weeks he has had 3 nosebleeds. That by itself isn't too worrying...it could be allergies or the dryness in the house from the heat. But...he has also complained of his head hurting a couple of times.

A little background...
He has had health problems since birth, and had a CT scan at 11 mos old due to a large head (feared hydrocephalus, but it isn't the case). He has a lot of gross motor delays as well.

My 'mommy instinct' has me worried...and I just can't put my finger on it. My DH doesn't seem too concerned, and thinks I am over-reacting. DS will go to the ped in May for his 3 yr checkup, but I'm thinking of bringing him in before that.

Moms and Dads...would you wait until May, or go ahead and make a visit?

I would go ahead and take hiim in. I don't know many 3 years that say there head hurts is he saying that why he's having the nosebleeds?

I never argue with mommy instinct. No harm bringing him early to find out that everything is fine.

I am not a mommy, but FWIW, in the past TWO weeks, I have also had three nosebleeds. :headache: I also have had bad headaches, but I attribute that to allergies and seasonal changes. ONE of the nosebleeds I brought on myself. I was picking my nose. :upsidedow Could your boy be picking his nose? The dry air doesn't help, and nose picking would exagerate an already dry nose.

The other two of my nosebleeds, I attribute to either allergies, dry air, or something else. I get nose bleeds all the time. I am anemic, my doctor has always said that doesn't help.

i would take him in. headaches and nosebleeds aren't uncommon in children, but considering his past health issues, especially the suspicion of hydrocephalus, i would err on the side of caution.

Because of this, I would take him. There is a "sixth sense" type thing that is telling you something and you should listen to it. (I don't mean something supernatural, but something inside you that KNOWS your child, knows that something is different)

Hopefully it's nothing. I honestly can't think of anything serious that it could likely be. However, I would not ignore that inner voice. There are lots of rare things that you could find if you google. Please don't google! Google is not always your friend! It won't be a big deal if he has his 3 year visit 4-6 weeks early. Go on and make the appointment now.

The headache complaints are unrelated to the nosebleeds.

Thanks for all the feedback. I think I am going to call the nurse hotline tomarrow and see what the ped's office thinks. I'd rather waste a $25 copay then there be something serious and me not pay attention.

I think I have more 'mommy paranoia' with my younger DS b/c of all his health issues. I think my worry, in this case...which may be totally unfounded...is a pituitary tumor. He isn't even on the growth chart b/c he is so little, and I just worry a lot about him. Like I said, I'd rather be over cautious than miss anything.

Hopefully the ped's office will just confirm that he has allergies, or dryness from the heat...and I won't worry anymore...

I would take him in then you will feel better. Try not to worry I really don't think he has a pituitary tumor. Let us know what the pedi says

I would go ahead and take him in, just to have him checked out and rule out anything more serious. The doc will be able to look deep inside his nose to see how dry things are in there and determine if the nosebleeds and headaches are related to dryness.

I know when my house is dry, I get headaches, but no nosebleeds. My son is the opposite. He gets the nosebleeds, but no headaches. A humidifier is a good thing to have in the house. Just make sure you keep it clean.

Head aches coupled with nosebleeds could indicate a problem. Take him to the Dr.

My DS4 gets a lot of nosebleeds. Allergy season is just kicking up now and he gets a lot of sinus pressure that leads to headaches. He also picks at his nose a lot. Partly from dryness over the winter and partly from the allergies. It really seems pretty common, but if it makes you feel better I would take him in. We just had DS into the doctor for something similar. We wanted to make sure he didn't have any ear issues because that is where his sinuses seem to drain and he NEVER EVER complains about his ears even if he has a raging infection. This allergy season kind of snuck up on us, next year I am going to mark my calendar to start the Zyrtrec on March 1st. He takes that through the fall as a preventative and it makes a huge difference. WE also are going for allergy testing in a few weeks.

I have 3 kids, ages 10, 8, & 3. One thing I've learned over the years is to trust your "mommy instinct." Have there been times when I've brought my kids in only to be told they're fine? Sure. But there have been even more times when I've brought them in and had my suspicions confirmed. For example, DD fractured her arm a couple of years ago. We brought her to the hospital, they x-rayed it and told us she was fine. I went home and called her ped and told him I felt that something wasn't right even though her x-ray was normal. He sent us to an orthopaedist who looked at the same x-ray and saw that there was a small fracture. She was in a full arm cast for a month.

Trust your gut and have him checked out. If it's nothing, you can relax. If there is a concern, you'll be happy that you didn't wait until May to bring him in.

Good luck! :goodvibes

For the nosebleeds, a cool mist humidifier can help a lot, especially at bedtime. A saline spray helps keeps nasal passages moist and helps also. A three year old complaining of headache should be checked out. Hope you find its nothing but I agree with the others that he should be seen.

Honestly, I wouldn't even ask for the nurse's opinion. No offence at all to nurses, they're wonderful and I plan to be one, but with it being allergy season I could see this all being easily dismissed as that without a proper exam. Your spidey sense is tingling, that's reason enough to make an appointment.
Good luck! I hope it's nothing at all to worry about!

I would go without a second thought.

I am so much more comfortable with being told my kids are fine then with hearing I missed something. Since I am the one up all night and crying when my kids aren't healthy I am the one who gets to choose when to go. I don't care what anyone else thinks about it either... not even a teensy bit.

My DD4 has nosebleeds quite often, sometimes several times a week. She also suffers from headaches as well from time to time. This is all due to her sinuses and allergies. We have had her tested and know what her triggers are but sometimes it is hard to avoid pollen and pets. Sometimes if the nosebleeds come often, I will bring her in just to make sure nothing else is going on. She is on zyrtec year round with sporadic claritin as well depending on the time of the year. Since she has started on the zyrtec and claritin, we haven't seen even 1/4 of the nosebleeds as before. Still headaches, but the pediatrician says those are normal with allergy sufferers. We just give her tylenol and they go away. Good luck. I hope everything is okay.

Update...

I went to get DS out of bed this morning, and it looked like a massacre in his crib. There was a half dried pool of blood about the size of a dinner plate, and it was in his hair and all over his face. So no question we went to the ped's office today.

The ped really does think it his allergies/heat causing dryness and irritation. But...he tested anemic today (he was borderline before). So we are going to half to start giving him iron supplements, and come back if he has another major bleed within the week. He was pale most of the day, probably b/c it was such a big nose bleed, and he is so little.

We are going to get referred to an ENT and possibly have a CT scan depending on how the next few weeks go. If he has a lot more bleeds, we will see an ENT, and if the ENT thinks it isn't allergies, we will get a CT scan.

So..I do feel somewhat better, but now I have to worry about the anemia...

Has he been tested for a vitamin K deficency?
