Both my DD's are telling me no to this plan, opinion please.

At home , we live on a river, and in the evening when we walk the river, sometimes day,or morning also. I will take off the harness and let guide dog swim in the river, after all she is a lab, and she works so hard.

When we go to Disney, would it be a bad idea to walk her on the beach between poly and grand. We are staying at SoG, and plan to walk poly at night.

My kids think she will jump in after working all day in the heat. I wouldn't mind, but I am after of alligators. Also. Don't know what Disney would think. I'm just afraid for her safety, when we go to pool,I always leave her behind since she gets so upset she can't swim with me. I know if I said no she would listen, but. I don't want to be mean and punish her.

I can't see, what are the beaches like, sand? Smooth? Nice water or dirty swamp? Alligators?

Maybe. If sandy could we play ball, if not a swim, she would love that also.

Oh, just to make sure you know,I would not take her harness off, but my kids think she will jump in.

They have signs warning not to go in it not because Disney dose want you to swim because they being mean but it for your safety they have amoeba that can kill you if it gets into your brain. their have been cases in Florida where kids died because of the amoeba none at disney that why they why they tell you not to swim to prefent anyone from getting hurt. if the dirt on the bottom of the floor is kicked around that can cause to be in the water more and if the dog put their head in the water they could get it plus their other animals besides alligators they also have been seen in the water are water moccasins. Most have sand beaches so if you think she won't go in you could walk her on Leash she could play in the sand.

Ot they once found a baby alligator in frontier land in mk they had to rope off areas until they could safely remove the little guy.

I was writing a completely different response until I noticed you said guide dog, but that leaves me with three things:

1) I think you would be presenting a HUGE risk to your dog. More than alligators I would worry about snakes. People do get bitten by snakes at Disney and I think going in the water is just asking for trouble. Then there is also the amoeba thing. I wouldn't do it unless you want to come home and possibly need a new dog a week later.

2) The wet dog could get that dangerous water on other people. Now if your dog doesn't get sick, you could make another person sick- either in your family or just some passer-by.

3) Even if the water itself weren't unsafe, now you are going to have a wet dog walking around. Wet dogs shake, if other people are there now your dog is shaking dog water on people. He may even leave a trail of dog water. If your dog passed somebody like my son and shook water on him, he would be covered in hives and have little eczema patches for weeks. I would be really annoyed with you. Usually with a guide dog you don't have to think about dog allergies so much because they are good at not interacting, but that crosses you over the line of now inflicting a dog on people. You are only allowed to have the dog with you because he is there to help, if you were just bringing a dog for fun he wouldn't be allowed there in the first place. I get that this can sound mean- I loved having dogs and cats and am sad every day that we can't now- but there is always another side to things. Dogs for fun aren't allowed for safety reasons. I would contact Disney of SOG directly and ask if they have suggestions for where you can go. Orlando is a big area, there have to be parks or some places a dog can go for fun.

The official answer from Disney will be no swimming by dog or human that why they post signs at all the beaches.

There are alligators in the water areas on the SOG driveway. Many alligators.

I would worry about that area more than the poly/grand beaches. After all, you can take water sport items in those waters, so the water isn't going to kill you if it gets on you.

When you are doing the water sports, you are deeper out in the water than the amoeba's habitat, so you are safe. Even the docks are over deeper water. Coming into the water from the shallows gets you right through that habitat.

Yes if water touches you it won't kill you but you or your dog puts your head in the water the amoeba can kill you. They do water sports but tell you not to put your head under water and it in more deeper water by the shore your kick up te dirt where they live.

To me the dangers far out weigh the few minutes of fun for the dog. Does he like any other type of rewards, maybe a cup of crushed ice to cool him off.

Thanks for all your thoughts, we won't be walking the beach, I cant read the signs, but now I know, and he would try to run to water even if I stop him, it would be like teasing him, so we won't do so. Can you walk the road, I can't remember a side walk between SoG and grand, I know there is at poly but don't remember the grand. Yes I know about the alligators coming down the road from SoG, but that is early morning usually when she isn't hot and needing a break so she never tries to go in that water.

We are just spoiled by dlr and having the kennel right there, for a quick game of catch or a potty break. Maybe we can find a quiet spot early in the morning on grounds to have a little free play, with a ball and a longer leash, I usually get up really early, 4 am, and shades is never all that busy.

But when we walk poly to grand she will need to stay In Room, to much temptation since around here she is allowed to go for a swim most days.

If you can get to fort wilderness in the morning they have a dog park you could take the boat from poly And it should be close I think to their boat dock. Also right now their building the new Dvc so not sure if the noise by the grand will bother the dog on the path between poly and grand.

Wow, we have a service dog and I can't imagine having them swim in any water like that. For one thing they would STINK to high heavens after a dip like that! How in the world would you allow them to accompany you into a restaurant if they smelled like the river water? I really am having a hard time getting my head around this question.

The answer is no, you should not let your dog in the water.

Yuck, just yuck.

There is no side walk once you excit SOG. There is a cross walk over to Poly but that's it. (nor are you allowed to walk on any main disney roads ;) )
However, there are plenty internal pathways where you could walk in poly. Also, at SOG you could also walk through the golf courses on the golf cart paths.

I'm blind I can't see the water. I asked because never in my 20 years going to dlr or wdw has anyone said the water stinks, the water is dirty, the water is gross, people are paying $600 to $800 a night to stay at the hotels to loOk at firth and dirt, I am amazed.

My dogs swim every day in the Columbia river, it is crystal clear, with sandy beaches. We walk it ever park near us with rattle snakes all around. They never stink, actually everyone asks all the time about how I groom them, I brush them, I have never giving them a bath, the river is enough to keep them clean always.

Now that I know that it is so dirty and gross they won't swim there, I already said that. I guess in my mind I had a picture of beauty and peace, not gross, smelly and discusting. I am surprised that anyone would find it beautiful and so many want to walk it. And I am truly surprised that the poly or grand can charge and get that kind of money from people who will see discusting water when they look out the windows.

Incase you did not read the post, I won't be walking her there.

Their nothing really Disney can do to the water the animals live their on their own and if they come up out of water or spotted Disney works hard to relocate them but if their not seen they can't do anything. They are take precautions against the amoeba by not letting people swim they affect all lakes in warm whether not just Disney lakes they clean the beaches it a nice walk on the path and on the beach. Disney provides pools so they don't think the rate they charge includes swimming in e lake so that how they can charge the rates they do. I understand you won't walk them their just don't want you to think Disney dose not care or dose nothing to clean the lakes when their not much they can do. I hope you and your family have a great time on your trip and your dog get some play time in a safe way.

I know the answer to this in dlr but not wdw, do they have splash parks, which parks have them? I know in dlr in bugs land, service dog is always allowed to get a little wet in the splash park, I don't let her get soaked, but I let her walk straight thru to cool off a little bit. Then I put the wax back on her feet and she is happy for a while.

Maybe it won't be so hot. Last sept we took her to dlr, it was the first time with her, and she had a very hard time, not like my retired dog. But it was 105, 2 of the days we were there, and over 99 everyday. Around home she is use to the heat, we get real hot here also, but she is not out working everyday all day like at dlr or wdw. And since here I do let her go swim, I am a little concerned that if she sees water she will go for it since she is allowed to here.

I mean she will be satisfied just playing ball in the room, which is fine. But there is all the water around, not like dlr where there is not much water, it is hot and she will be working, I know if I tell her no she will stay, but if just every now and then I could sneak a little water minute in she will love me.

Don't worry, ex always stays in the room when we do the water parks, my dog would go crazy there.

In Epcot they have two areas that water comes out that a dog could walk by and get a little wet and in mk story book circus has a splash zone that if your dog likes getting wet they will get soaked the oly problem with that one is you my get wet to a lot of the water comes from above in dtd their ones that come out of the ground kids play in it and it away from the main areas.

If you need water for the dog any quick service will give you free ice water or water without ice if needed.

Ot if your ever in buffalo ny my dogs cousin owner owns an Olympic sized pool for dogs called k-9 splash I have a French water dog and his whole family is dock jumping champs so if they see water they also will want to go in. My dog brother a pet therapy dog for the va hospital here in New York and goes to the beach sometimes and comes back full of sand so she doesn't do that to much because all the grooming she has to do with him being a therapy dog.

Thanks, I will check out the splash parks. I know about getting water for her, it is mainly to help cool down her pads and relax them or they get cracked after 10 days there.

Is buffalo near Saratoga ny. That is where my new dog comes from, maybe she went swimming there, I know her puppy raisers use to take her to a pool to swim all the time, I have some pictures of her as a pup swimming. I think that is maybe why they picked her for me, because they saw my retired dog swimming in the river when they came out to do m,y home visit. I told them that he swam almost everyday I. The river, it is literally right outside my door.

As I said she is so use to it, but also her poor little pads on her feet get so hot walking the pavement all day. I do use wax on them but just to get a little wet, wash off the wax and get new on once or twice a day will help her a lot.

I will also give her plenty of water to drink, I carry her colapsable bowl and a water bottle all the time. At dlr when she goes to the kennels, usually for 2 hours everyday so we can do some rides she can't go on, she got ice cream. My retired dog always got one also. At home they get a cone once a month, but on vacation they get one every day at 3, the only food other than dog food I have ever giving them. They love it. I always say, how many licks to get to the bottom of the cone, with her, just one bit, with retired dog, three.

So a splash park in all but animal kingdom, and that is the one park I am debating if we take her anyway. That's great to know, thanks so much.

Near not close but maybe a 2 hour drive I got my dog in Canada and they drive up to let them swim their I haven't yet but may be in the future to let him go for a swim My dogs like ice cream to.

Ak gets so hot it may be the same temp as the other parks but for some reason it feels so much hotter then the others plus their not as much shade so that doe not help. Would your dog wear boots I was going to suggest mushers but see you already do. I don't think dhs has a splash park unless you have her stand under the Umbrella but light motor and cars show it also make for a good pic of her she can pretend she signing in the rain.

So their water features in Epcot, mk, down town disey market place
