Opinions on Victorinox luggage

I'm looking to buy a new set of luggage for DFi and myself. More so for DFi since he's planning to travel for work more often shortly after our WDW trip. Some executives on my floor recommended the Victorinox line of luggage. He showed me his suitcase which was pretty impressive - break off zipper pulls, a mini garment bag/compartment for suits, rotating luggage handle pull etc. I looked up the prices and they were quite steep. I don't make an executive's salary so I'm wondering what the quality is like. It seems like it would be a good suitcase for travelling - especially with the little suit compartment but since I don't have an executive's salary, I'm not sure I can afford to replace if the suitcase falls apart.

If anyone has any recommendations or suggestions, please let me know!

TIA :goodvibes

I travel a great deal for work and have Tumi luggage. It has always been great and durable. It is built to handle airline abuse.

If you think the Victorinox is costly, wait until you price Tumi!!!

I have the Victorinox and love it. I buy mine from either ebags or one of the other online sellers where it's less the list price (but still steep) I have had my 22" rollerboard for about 2 years and it works fine. I have been very happy and have purchased some other pieces (tote bag, garment bag)

That said, if you do NOT travel a lot I think this is probably too steep. You might try the Travelpro brand also. You can get some good deals on it and it works fine.

After purchasing a new nicer suitcase in a designer color and breaking it in on a vacation, I've determined that there is no point in spending good money on luggage if you are flying. Upon arrival in Hawaii, my suitcase came off the plane w/ permanent black marks and scratches all over it. Upon arrival at WDW in January, one of the wheels was knocked off. I purposely bought this luggage because it was made from the same material as NFL helmets. Well, it may hold up in the NFL, but not on commercial airlines. I now understand why everyone uses black luggage. It doesn't show all the dirt and black permanent stains like other colors do.

Mine is "HOT PINK" LOL!

I have been able to get the stains off. (Can't remember what I used but I found something at Target and cleaned the thing)

Also if your wheels broke that fast then I would take it back! In over 15 years of flying I have NEVER had wheels broken. I think one of the tricks is to make sure the wheels are not too "extended" (don't really know how to say this, but if the wheel stands out dramatically from the luggage it seems more likely to get broken. On my hot pink when the luggage stands up you can barely see the wheels for example)

Also, I don't recommend hard sided luggage. In my years of trouble the MOST issues I have had are with hard sided.... (Crushing seems to be an issue.)

For what it is worth the TJMaxx and Marshalls stores have a lot of Victorinox luggage right now. Not every piece in every color but a decent selection...I looked last night at the Marshalls by my house at a darker red and the black that they had in multiple sizes for less than half of the suggested retail. I also saw a slate gray/blue color at TJ Maxxs...if there is one near you you might check and see if they have what you are looking for.

Watch out for fakes. Walmart has recently been selling luggage marked "Swiss Army" with a little silver Red Cross badge on it, but it isn't Victorinox.

Try to get last year's models on clearance at TJ or the like, but don't look for this stuff at big mass market discounters.

The suitcase is more for DFi who's going to be traveling about once a month for about a week at a time.

I checked out a luggage store on my lunch break and they had the medium sized suitcase for $259.99 CDN. Not as bad as I thought. There was a sign advertising 20% off but they were pretty busy so I wasn't able to get a salesperson. I really liked the bright blue and orange suitcases but I'm probably going to stick to black.

Thanks for the advice everyone! I'll see if I can go to a discount store tomorrow. We don't have TJ Maxx in Canada, I think the equivalent is Winner's - they're both owned by the same parent company.
