I'm considering buying a used Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer edition from a person at work.

Its not new but we want a reliable, sturdy car that we can pay cash for. (and lower our car insurance bills as well)

Any thoughts? Ideas?

Based on problems a friend is having with her Ford Expedition, I'd stay as far away from Fords as possible. Her car is only 5 years old and is falling apart. They took it to the dealer for all schedule maintenance also. I'd also NEVER buy a car from someone I knew, it's a recipe for disaster IMO.

We've had four Mustangs in the past, and had no problems with the various used Mustangs... (1978, 1982, 1980, and 1985).

I've also had a 1970 Ford Maverick

We had bad luck with a Windstar, but it was crappy year for the Windstar that year.

So with the six Fords we have owned, we have had one "crappy" one.

I personally wouldn't buy an Expedition, thats too much car for me.

I love my '97 Explorer and haven't had a lick of trouble with it. I've got 94,000 on it and counting! My sister just bought a used Eddie Bauer Explorer and is now telling me she should have bought one years ago.
I say take it for a ride, have your mechanic check it out and go from there.

I would NEVER buy a car from someone I worked with or a friend/family member...thats just ASKING for trouble.

I would never buy a ford either but regardless, even if it was a GM I still wouldnt buy it from someone I knew and dealt with on a daily basis.

Exploders have problems, high roll over rates and are fairly expensive to insure..keep those in mind

the OP is talking about an explorer not an expedition.

I would have the least amount of insurance because of the fact that it is a cash car.. wont need to keep the expensive insurance on it... where I live is the highest insurance rates in the US!

We have a 2002 Explorer that we are currently leasing. I love it and so does DH. We have never had any problems with it (knock on wood. ;) ) If we are given a good deal when the lease is up we will probably buy it. :)

We bought a used Ford Explorer a few years ago. We only kept it 2 years & it ran good BUT I had trouble with one of the back doors. In my Ford Taurus, I had trouble with my passenger front door. On my Ford Windstar, I have trouble with both sliding doors! That being said, this is the last Ford we're owning. Before meeting my DH, I only had GM's & never, never, never did I have a problem with them. I'm going back to GM.

Our insurance rates went up with the Explorer just because it's an SUV. Call your insurance agent first to find out if this vehicle is really worth it for you.

Aside from all that...I did enjoy it immensely while I had it. I loved being high up & I loved the power & I also loved that when we had a snow storm, I was able to plow through my side street & not get stuck!! I also loved all that cargo room!

Good luck on your decision!!

We, too, have a 2002 Limited Edition Explorer. Yes, I like it a lot. The ease of driving it is wonderful. Yet, it doesn't ride like my Town & Country vans before it. We are a four Ford vehicle family. Not necessarily by choice, but the kids' cars were the best deal available for our budget. DH recently bought a 2004 F-150. We honestly would have never thought we would drive Fords again, but we're very happy. Just because you have a Ford car you don't have good luck with and can't recommend doesn't mean that for every Ford. There are lemons in every make and model.

Most of my Fords had no problems... but just wondering about the Explorer.

My MIL had almost the same car years ago, and she loved it.

I'm just not certain what to think
