can someone give me some information on hulu. We are thinking about getting rid of our direct tv service but was wondering if you get the most current show the week it comes out or do you have to wait to see it until later.....any info would be awesome so I can present it to the hubby.....

thanks again

I don't get all the hype over hulu. I found the shows I went on to see either you had to wait a week to see the new episode or it just redirected you to that channels site to watch it. You can sign up and get a trial of hulu plus and check it all out. I did last year and didn't find any use for it. I wish I could get DH to drop the dumb satellite but he refuses. I have quit trying! :sad2: I would be able to get pretty much everything from either the websites for the networks or netflix or redbox renting.

We dropped direct tv and have Hulu and Netflix. We are not big TV watchers though. However episodes are available the next day on Hulu. What I would do is look at the shows available too - you may not be a good fit based on your viewing preferences. It works well for us though- its cheap, I get my fill of Job Stewart and there is enough for me to watch when I run on the treadmill!

In a nutshell -- it's mainly ABC/NBC/FOX programming (very little to no CBS programming). Some cable shows are there, too.

Suggest you do a trial to see if it's "your thing" as many BBers swear by it, while that many more are disappointed.

First off, Hulu and Hulu Plus are two different things. Hulu is free, but there is a delay of days to weeks for many shows. It also isn't available through streaming devices like a Roku. Hulu Plus is a paid service and shows are generally available the next day. Hulu Plus doesn't carry CBS shows with the exception of a very few older shows that are available. For the few CBS shows that I watch, I have to make sure to either catch it when it airs or watch it later via Hulu on my pc. We dropped our cable about 6 months ago now and even with 2 teens it hasn't really been an issue. We use a combo of Hulu Plus, Amazon Prime, and over the air and it seems to be plenty for us.

Personally I love Hulu. Its not an end all solution by any means but the content it does provide I love the service especially for the price. :thumbsup2

I lived off Hulu and Netflix for sometime when I first moved out and I was on a budget, and I think I could easily go back to it. Only problem is some sports, but that's what sports bars are for.

Netflix: no commercials
Hulu: commercials

Nuff said.

This. :thumbsup2 I was so disappointed that paying for Hulu Plus didn't eliminate the commercials.

I use Hulu (non-plus) for current shows -- Netflix streaming seems to be a season behind (ex. Burn Notice, Warehouse 13, etc.).

We haven't had cable for about 10 years -- we don't really miss it.

Hulu plus has most network shows the next day.
No CBS as others stated.

As far as the commercials, way less than regular tv.

The reason for that is Hulu is jointy-owned by Disney/ABC, NBCUniversal, and News Corp./FOX.

CBS has no ownership interest in the joint venture...

We ditched direct TV and went with HULU+ and Netflix. Family now watches more tv. Was hoping it would have an opposite effect. :-)

I have found that ABC and CBS and many of the cable network's websites (AMC, TNT, Bravo, etc.) run most shows the next day.

Fox and NBC hold them back 8 days unless you pay for Hulu plus.

I think you should write a list of what shows are important to you and then check out the websites for those networks to see how they handle full episodes online.

Also for those of you streaming with netflix, I have found that Amazon Prime has most of the same movies and TV series. For $79 a year I get the same service as Netflix streaming and I get free shipping on my Amazon purchases.

I have hulu and netflix. I like it. I would do the trial to see if it has your tv shows. We haven't had Dish network since August and we don't even miss it.

We dropped Directv after 8+ years a few months ago. Signed on for the Amazon Prime and the Hulu Plus. We thought Hulu and HuluPlus were the exact same...um, nope. The only new show we were interested in wasn't included in the same price. Oh well, dropped the Plus after the trial.

Now we only see what's on Amazon Prime. For the most part, there aren't any newer shows we are interested in. And if we need the highlights, we can read the synopsis or watch bits on the internet.

Much easier to turn the tv off and not be tied down. Have seen many classic movies and shows. DD15 watching Cleopatra with Elizabeth Taylor right now. DS2 adores I Love Lucy and Dick Van Dyke--go figure the black and white holds his attention.

Besides, our DVD collection was being ignored with the satellite. We just couldn't justify the costs, the numerous programs blocked by our parental control settings and our waistlines were definitely expanding.

Now we have a $79 a year payment that also gives me a kindle lending library, package shipping and lots of programs we were ignoring.
