Operation Southern slow down started today and Georgia, Alabama, Florida, and maybe one other state. I didn’t hear on the news it will last through Sunday you will see more police on the highways and the roads trying to catch speeders.

That is on top of the new Florida law, as of July first, which states you will be arrested if you are driving 50+ MPH over the posted limit or over 100 MPH. I saw on the morning news that they recently arrested a man for driving over 100 MPH on his motorcycle.

When I was driving over to Cocoa Beach last month I was passed by a sporty car that had to be doing well over 100. I was following another vehicle and driving the posted limit of 70 and this car passed us in a blur. If I had pulled out to pass the vehicle in front of me I would not have seen them in time. This is not an unusual occurrence on the 528 either, especially in the stretch where there is little development and few exits. I hope the new law helps in this respect.

I have done the road trip from Michigan to WDW many times over the years and can remember thinking more than once, "Are there any police in this state?" I would drive for hours without seeing a trooper or a deputy or anybody. Just about every car was driving 90-whatever mph, other than through the urbanized areas like Cincy/Knoxville/etc where traffic got serious. It sounds like public opinion has finally forced the government's hand in some of these regions.

The police are definitely taking the new law seriously in central Florida. Two more arrests, one going 113mph on the 417 (she said she was going to pick up her dog ) and one going 116 on the 528. It used to be bad enough but since the pandemic the roads feel virtually lawless sometimes.

First offense can get you thirty days in jail and a $500 fine. Second offense within a year is three months in jail and a $1000 fine, with the possibility of a license suspension. I don’t know what they do with the ones who keep reoffending while driving on a suspended license (because, yeah, Florida . . .it’s going to happen).

South Carolina and Tennessee are also cracking down hard too.
