How did you request a name of a specific soldier. This might be a great service project for our middle school.

Where do you all plan on shopping?

I will probably pick up things at Wal-Mart or Target. I plan on sending them products that are now sold as wipes or powders: facial cleansing wipes, Comfort Bath Wash Cloths and Shampoo in a Cap, Cottonelle wipes, Listerine Oral Care Strips, Dove and Lever Body Deodorant Sheets, etc.

I'm just going to keep going until I hear he isn't stationed over there anymore.

Hey! Thanks for the info. Did not even think of those nasty breath strips. I hate them! But, they could prob. use them if they can't stop to brush their teeth.

I did not request a certain name. I just asked for a k-9 unit person and their dog. Then I sent another request for a name, did not specify a state or sex. They sent me two names, both women.
I did a search on one name and she graduated from Cornell.

I don't have a lot of extra cash right now and want to get the most bang for my buck.

There are a lot of coupons out there for the type of products that I listed. As a matter of fact, I have coupons for all of them. You may want to see what kind of coupons come out this Sunday before going shopping. Dollar stores would also be a good place to shop. I think they will be grateful for anything that is sent. Some are even requesting dog collars to wear.

I forgot about the flea collars. They said the sand fleas are terrible and they want to wear the collars on their ankles.

I also received two names. I went shopping tonight and picked up snacks and some personal care items. I hit both the dollar store and Odd Lots. Our local Odd Lots has a great selection of snack foods and I was able to get individual size cookies, crackers and candy to add to the care packages. Now I just need to fit it all into the box.

I was wondering, does anyone know how they get the names? Do they just get random lists of everyone that goes over? Do the military men and women sign up for it?

It seems as if they sign up for it. On the k-9 unit one I got, he asked specifically for blow pops(for him) and booties for his dog.
So, it would make sense that they signed up for it.
I wonder if some of these kids don't have a lot of family to rely on to send them things.

The other two names they sent me don't have any specific details on what they would need.

I wrote letters to all three last night, sending them out today.
It will be interesting to see if all three write back.

I sent out letters to my 2 servicemen. Now I will get the packages started. The web site mentioned boxes you can get at Post Office. Has anyone done this or what kind of boxes did you use?

I use the large Priority Mail boxes from the Post Office. They are free and a good size.

Yep Just ask for the largest priority mailing box they have. You can also order them on line and they are still free.

Thanks to jamsmom I just ordered priority boxes from USPS site, and yes they are free

I figured out the package dilema. For those of you sending packages. You want to use USPS Priority Mail Boxes Size 7 (larger one) or Size 4 (smaller one). These boxes are free I went to the Post Office yesterday to get my boxes and I also got the Customs Declarations at the same time. Hope this helps anyone that was like I was.
