I talked to the painting office of our movers on Monday. The movers had damaged the wall so the painting guy called on Monday to set up a time to come repair it. The guy sounded perfectly normal. I got a call yesterday to confirm - I assumed it was the same guy. He sounded like he had laryngitis. I had to call back today to report a problem and when the guy answered I said "oh I am sorry you're still sick". He said "I have been like this for 30 years - I had cancer"
. I said "I am so sorry - I thought you were the same guy I had talked to before and that you were sick" he said it was okay and we moved on to the business at hand. But I feel so bad about it. He's probably used to it I guess - but still.

Don't feel bad I'm sure he's used to it and didn't think anymore about it. Of course I can't speak for him personally but I have a brother in law who was in a car accident when he was 5. He had his voice box crushed and since he was 5 (he's 38 now) he has sounded like he has laryngitis. It's sounds like it would be painful for him to talk but he says it doesn't bother him. People say things to him quite a bit because they think he too is sick. He says it doesn't bother him. He's just used to it and explains his situation. He really doesn't think anymore of it.
