Onsite: Is it worth it?

First off, this is our first family trip to WDW in 13 years. I now have 3 more children (5 total) than at our last trip and I definitely see the benefits of doing rope drop. We’ve already got an off-site vacation rental and were planning on ubering to CR with a mobile order to rope drop Magic Kingdom since the disadvantage to off-site guests is so significant with the extra transport from the TTC to MK entrance. I’ve been watching the forums for the last month and a half and have heard a few first-hand accounts of people successfully getting into CR with a mobile order but just the last few days I’ve read several first-hand accounts of cars (including Lyft/Uber) being turned away from the CR gate and I’m wondering if it’s worth it to try to rope drop MK by going to the CR.

Our plan is to arrive between 7-7:20am for a 9am opening so we have time to eat breakfast without rushing. If we get turned away, I don’t even know what plan B would be with it being so much earlier than the TTC opens for cars. So, first question, any suggestions for how to handle this if we keep our off-site plans?
Another option I’ve considered is to transfer to on-site partway through our stay. Once I took into account the savings from returning the rental car, canceling part of our vacation rental, the cost of the uber, and parking, it would cost an additional $350 to stay onsite at Pop Century for the last half of our vacation. The cost to staying the entire time at Pop Century was an additional $1500 because it was more expensive on the earlier days & because we would have to eat out a lot more than we planned. We already have some ADRs booked for the second half of our trip so switching at that point is less expensive.

From what I’m seeing the pros are that we could much more easily rope drop MK, we could let my teens have slightly more freedom to stay at the park and I can take my younger kids back midday, and my kids (especially the younger ones) would get to experience the “magic” of staying on site.
The cons are that it would cost us $350 more than we were planning and we would have the hassle of moving halfway through our vacation including returning the rental car. If we made the switch, my husband would just drop us off at the hotel and then return the rental car to the airport and take the Magic Express back to the resort. Is it possible to take the Magic Express after dropping off the rental car or would they require the info of an arriving flight for him to use it?

Thoughts, suggestions? Is it worth the $350 and extra hassle of moving mid-trip with a family of 7 to stay on-site part of our trip?

You can return the rental at the Car Care Center. The one time I did it, it cost the same as the airport. Then just take the skyliner to wherever.

I don't like driving at WDW, so I would do whatever it takes to not rent the car at all. Nothing wrong with two Little Mermaid rooms at AoA.

If you plan on being in the parks for the vast majority of your time there, on-site is better. Even with the Plague Related Changes to everything, it’s still less of a hassle than trying to come in from off-site.

you can’t be certain Uber/Lyft will ever be available, timely or reasonable. At least with on site, you have the internal system to rely on

I just checked and dropping off at the Car Care Center adds $120 more to the car rental cost, unfortunately. 😢 Since we don't have any plans to visit the parks on the day we would change lodging I think we'd rather save the money and return it to the airport, especially if we can use Magic Express.

A few thoughts to consider:

  1. The Skyliner does not go to the WDW Car Care Center.
  2. People ARE getting turned away at CR and at other resorts when they just have a Mobile Order and are trying to get dropped off there by Uber/Lyft.
  3. If your DH is going to take Magical Express from airport to on site resort after dropping car off at Orlando airport, then yes, he WILL need to provide a airline, flight #, and arrival time when he calls to make his Magical Express reservation.
Honestly, I think that you should keep it simple and just drive to the MK parking on your MK day. All of the stuff with turning the rental car in early, switching resorts, trying to get an Uber/Lyft for 7 people (good luck!)...I'm not sure if even Uber XL will fit 7 people (and how many car seats would you need?)...plus 5 children in the mix of all of that...you're adding a lot of stress and complexity to your trip.

Feed everybody breakfast at your vacation rental early that morning. Pile everybody in the rental car. Drive to the TTC. Get to the toll plaza ~ 8:00 am (for 9:00 am MK opening). It'll be fine. When the kids get hungry an hour later, feed them a snack **IN** MK.

And you'll save yourself a heck of a lot of money on QS breakfast for 7 people.

** Edited to add **
Your teens can still experience the freedom of going off and doing their own thing during the day even if you're staying off site. And you all can still experience the "magic" of using on site transportation to get other places.

For example, on an Epcot day, you'd enter at the front entrance near the parking lot. But you could have lunch or dinner at Primo Piatto at the Riviera (which is a stop on the Skyliner). Everybody gets the fun of riding on the Skyliner there and back and you get a good meal for QS prices in the midst of all that.

Or on a MK day, take the boat to Wilderness Lodge and eat at Roaring Fork (QS) there. When you're done, take the boat back. Or take the boat to Fort Wilderness and eat at P&J's Southern Take Out (QS). There's a playground not too far from the boat dock, if memory serves me correctly. The Settlement Trading Post is right there, too (that's fun to browse in). Take boat back to MK. It could be a fun & relaxing escape from the parks in case everybody needs a break from Theme Park Fatigue.

Thanks for your thoughts, everyone. We decided to just go for it and transfer mid-trip to stay on-site. We found a great Hotwire deal for Pop Century that is going to actually save us money. Also, FYI, for anyone interested, when I spoke with someone from Disney on the phone, they told me that it wouldn't be a problem for us to use Magical Express after dropping off our rental car. She gave me the number to call and said we would just need to call and set it up after dropping off the car.

Sorry, this part is incorrect. As long as you have a valid stay at a Disney hotel, you’re entitled one round trip ride on the DME no matter how you get to the airport.

I’m glad everything is working out and you’re saving money!

I think you'll really enjoy Pop! Glad everything has worked out!

Just a heads up that when you are putting in room requests for Pop Century, you need to request 'connecting' rooms if you want rooms that are joined with an internal door.

I have a different reason for staying onsite than the (very practical, by the way) ones listed here:

Mine is entirely psychological. For me, being onsite makes the vacation totally submersive. It is ALL Disney. I can be in that Magic Bubble for the entire stay. When I leave the parks, I'm still surrounded by Disney theming and happy cast members with the same name tags. If I take a day off from the parks, no worries- still at Disney!

If I was staying off-campus, I know I couldn't maintain that feeling.

i have used Uber in the general Disney area at least 100 times over the past three years, and have NEVER had to wait more than 10 minutes. I think you can be certain that this is a viable option.

I've also been told you can look up a flight that will be arriving around the time you want to catch the DME from the airport and put that info in the on-line request.

Does anyone know when this started? Is it Covid related? I remember, just a couple years ago, you could take a taxi/Lyft to the CR or wherever, no problem, no questions asked basically. When did this restriction start?

yes this is all new covid related. We had no issues whatsoever when we were there Feb 2020

I saw a DIS article about it on wdwinfo.com a month or 2 about it.

What I’ve read multiple times on the Transportation board is that you should call the DME number in advance and tell them what you’re doing and approximately when you expect your husband to need the DME. They’ll set it up for you. No need to be looking up flights or anything else - as Disney resort guests you’re entitled to one round trip, no matter how you arrive at MCO.
