You mentioned online check in as being a good thing. This will be our first time at disney. Should we still do online check in? We will need guidance on the hotel and parks. Will we still get this with a fast checkin.

Yes, they give you that attention. The online check-in just allows them to get your room keys and packet ready ahead of time. They will take whatever time you need to explain the basics.
Things like getting dining or recreation reservations would be done at the concierge desk.

Pete talked about online check in during his All Star Music review on the discussion show this week. He was diggin' it. And I have to agree with him.

I did online check in for my trip in December for DISaPalooza. Loved it. I will do this for all my trips from now on.

I used On Line Check In for the first time this month (at AS Music) and it was wonderful. In fact, we arrived at the resort around 9:30 am, and our room was ready and waiting for us. It was great, and I will use it from now on.

Yes, by all means. All the online check in does is gives them a chance to print up your documents and keys and such ahead of time but you'll still go to the counter and talk to a CM and they will still be able to give you directions, answer questions, etc. There is also a concierge desk at the hotels that does the same thing at any time, not just check in. You won't have to wander around lost. :) Have fun!

What about if you are hoping to get a room change? I haven't gone for a prefered room, but if they have them available we would quite like a King Size bed (at Pop) since there is only two of us.

I have heard they do them, so should I just not do online check in and ask at the desk?

You'll have your room assigned when you do online check in. You'll actually need to spend more time at the check in desk if you want to modify or upgrade. You'd definitely get a new set of room keys because the ones waiting for you are tied to the room you've been assigned.

Thanks Lori, we'll just check in there!
