Online banking and bill pay

I have been paying all my bills through my bank website (online banking and billpay) for about a year now and haven't had any problems with it.

I just paid a stack of bills last Monday (11/28), and my gas bill is the only one that hasn't posted yet. I don't know how long it normally takes for this bill to go through, because there was a foul-up with my account and I haven't been getting billed for the past 5 months. Now, I've sent in this huge payment for 4 months worth of gas service and it hasn't posted!

Is it normal that it could take 7 days for an online payment to go through?

How long should I give it before I file a ticket with the bank?
 
it will only post when the company deposits the payment, not when you pay it.
 
It disappeared out of my checking account on the day I sent the payment through, but the company hasn't gotten it, or deposited it yet. I'm just wondering if it's normal for it to be taking so long, or if I should be worried!
 
Do you know if the bank sent an electronic payment or a check? Most of mine are electronic but for 3 places they send a check. Of course with the electronic payments, they come out of my bank right away. The checks only after the company deposits them. If it was an electronic payment I'd give the gas company a call to verify they got it. Maybe the account number was wrong or something.
 

It might depend on whether your bank sends a check, or pays it electronically. I have some that credit my account that day because it's all electronic, and I have some that take about a week, because my bank sends the company a check. It also gets confusing if the bank sends a check, because it does not list who it was sent to in my statement - it just lists the amount.

If they sent the payment via check it could take 5-10 business days.
 
Thanks everyone. I called the bank and they put me on conference call with the gas company. They say that they haven't received the check yet, so I'm supposed to give it a few more days.

I'm normally not this anxious about things, but this gas company has proven itself to be completely incompetent with billing and record-keeping, so I feel like I have to keep a close eye on them. I'm really worried they aren't ever going to post this payment and I'll end up paying double!

i read you nightmare with the gas company and i owuld have been freaking out
