One Way Trip to Canada, Eh? FINAL THOUGHTS 08/10

Ugh I hate falling so far behind! First I was busy busy busy and now I am sick! Ack! I'll have to catch up tonight or tomorrow if my head is up to reading. ;)

It has been nice reading your report, although with a tear in my eye. We had such a wonderful time on that cruise. It is funny how everyone was waiting in the hallway to get in the cabins. Our kids were in the pools and I kept a check, but spent most of my time on a chair on the deck until the crowd thinned out. Our side seemed to have something going on because they didn't open the doors until closer to 2:20. It was hard getting up and down the stairs to check because of all the people sitting on them. We just left the kids in the pool until 3:00, while I was able to pull the suitcases in and unpack. Maybe after school gets out I can make a report. But I am enjoying yours! I look forward to your next installment.................
Thanks for being here! I'm glad you had such a good time! It sure went by fast.
Good idea to jusr enjoy the pool. We don't usually hang out at the doorway, but once we got there we were sort of trapped there by the crowd.
No - we were part of the "single-Mom" tables 33 & 34. We met some great people on the cruise and I was the source of knowledge even though I was a first timer just like everyone else at our table. Yay disboards!
Love it! Jim doesn't discount the DIS after I have gotten so many tips!

Hope you are better quick! Maybe this will give you time to catch up I am fighting a comeback of the virus I had when we left Those immunity boosters are kickin it.

Oh, that stinks you had to ask. They put a Welcome Home magnet on our door, and then we got a phone call telling us to stop by the desk and say Arrrgh on pirate day and they gave us a pirate Mickey pin and some tatoos, and then we went to the presentation and got hats and a bag and a pen and of course the vacation planning books. Then we went to a sales presentation and got a print of the famous Walt and Lily on a cruise with the stuffed Mickey in Lily's hand. I don't mind telling you here, because I might forget. Did you get daily calls from DVC on your phone?

Thanks! That sucks we missed out on the extras (pirate stuff), but oh well :confused3. I'm not sure why there was a problem because we stopped by the desk twice to give them our cabin so they could add us to the list, but they never did (plus, we had booked on points!).

Nope, we didn't get any calls either (or the invitation to the DVC members event - luckily I went and asked about it the first day, so we were able to still go). I guess the system must have missed us (maybe they're not able to add people once the ship's left? Since I did ask twice, so one would think we would have been added if they could...). Oh well!

I didn't get any of the DVC stuff my first couple of cruises either...I finally got on the list last year on my Med cruise.

Looks like they need to fix their system. It would probably be a good idea to call MS and ask them to be sure you are linked in the DCL system:confused3 Before the cruise, I was able to see it in both the DVC "my vacations" link and in the DCL system of course for "My Reservations." Did you check that also?

Wow! I had no idea the rush after the rooms were ready was like rope drop! Love all your goodies from DVC and the Castaway Club! The sail away party looks like a lot of fun -- glad you were underway on time! :thumbsup2

Wow....seeing that Sail Away party makes me want to cruise even more...

It's funny that you were having a stationary "sail away" party, haha.

Very smart to use the pool while it's still warm. I don't think I'll ever be interested in cruising to a cold location...

Wow, that's a really nice fish extender gift! Can't wait to see what the others are!

It is kind of like RD! :rotfl2: I have seen them with a rope across in the past, but someone must have crawled under or something, cuz they had the doors to the hallway locked tight!

The goodies just kept coming!
Yes, Disney does know how to throw a party!

Stationary sail away! :lmao:
Yes, my next cruise will be warm and sunny! :beach:
More goodies coming up!

Thursday, April 28th

I actually woke up before Jim at about 7:20 am – me waking up before him is rare. Him sleeping past 5 am is even more rare! I realized that I had put the room service card out for between 7:30 and 8:00. So I quickly put on my robe and brushed my teeth. The knock on the door was promptly at 7:30! Ahhh, caffeine! Now this coffee is not Starbucks, but it is hot, it has caffeine in it, and I can just relax in my jammies and enjoy it! I ordered assorted pastries also.
IMGP2681.jpg

The Sea was really rough today -

IMGP2682.jpg

Jim got up and took a shower while I enjoyed my coffee, then I hurried up and got ready. We had separate missions this morning. He was going to wait in line for the wristband which would allow us to purchase the commemorative pin for this cruise, and I was heading to the DVC meeting to see what’s new and get some goodies! Both of these events were at 9am.

When we stepped out the door, we had some morning surprises waiting for us in our FE!

IMGP2684.jpg

A little sewing kit from First Timers
A handy booklet of maps of SF from Paul & Sue – DL1957
A Mickey Mouse treat bag from one of our UK friends! It had:
A Sebastian puppet, a puzzle book, a Mater key chain and a British Royal Wedding cruise magnet.

I arrived at Wave Bands and checked in. I received a shopping bag and 2 hats, a pen and a vacation planning guide so I could spend more money with Disney!
I found a small table with 2 chairs because I knew Jim would probably be done before I was. I went over to the coffee table – they had coffee, tea and water set up and some Big Island cookies from the RS menu, and I think some fruit. I just got a cup of coffee – I didn’t need any more carbs after my pastry. When I returned, the people at the booth next to me had stolen my other chair!

I told them my husband was coming and I was saving a seat for him and they said they would give it back when he came.
A waiter came by and gave me a Blue Hawaiian! Aloha!!
Smiley-Hula.gif
The presentation was fun, and there was a drawing for $200 OBC (on board credit) but I didn’t win it. Of course the theme was Hawaii, because they are currently selling points for Aulani, which will open this Fall. There were also some great deals on add –ons at our home resort, SSR and for BLT, but it is not in the plan for us right now.

Jim arrived, and our neighbors did indeed give him a chair! A waiter brought him some juice – he didn’t want the Blue Hawaii drink. Pretty soon I was given another drink because “this is a party!!!” okay it was 9am and I hadn’t really had breakfast yet – but I was on Vacation, and dreaming of Hawaii, and did I mention the drinks were FREE? so Party On! or Hang Ten! or something like that :hippie:

Oh, Jim’s adventure with the wristbands? No problem. We had heard horror stories about people waiting in line for hours and not getting any pins on previous special cruises, so we didn’t know what to expect. He said he was about number 50 or so in line – there was no pushing or shoving, etc. Everyone was happy. For each wristband, you were allowed to buy 2 pins between Friday and Sunday, and then they were open sales. He was offered an extra wristband for me also, but we weren’t into selling them on EBay, so he just got the one and figured he’d leave some pins for someone else.

After our “I wish” adventures in Aulani, we decided to go get some breakfast. It was nice and sunny outside, even though a little breezy, so we decided to get the BB buffet and some sun, considering there would be few chances on this cruise. I had a lt. sweater on, and we sat closer to the inside out of the breeze – it was very nice!

IMGP2683.jpg

It was pretty chilly and windy on deck, so I put my left over BH drink in the fridge, and we headed up to the Outlook Café to read. I went to the bar to order a coffee with Bailey’s, and we met BobandLee from our thread. We had a nice little visit about all the cruises they’ve been on and all the cruises we hope to do. Jim got another wine glass for me, and we settled in to some chairs near the window. It was a little hard to read, because Jim didn’t bring anything to read, and he couldn’t see the TV, so he was squirmy. He left to go somewhere and I tried to settle in to my story, but there was a lot going on – people coming and going and waiters walking around, etc. It was hard to concentrate.

Next: MEETIN’ AND SCRAPPIN’

Okay, not that kind of scrappin' :rotfl2: Linda, SeaULater, had organized a scrapbook class for us at 1, and it was just about time to get ready for that. We stopped for a little snack from Goofy’s Galley, I picked up my drink, and my glue stick and headed to AP. I think Jim went to work out. Scrapping was a lot of fun, and Linda had some great pages set up for us to do! She had a problem though – she shipped the supplies by Parcel Post to Calif. (don’t ever do that if you actually want the items to actually reach your destination, I’ve learned) 2 weeks before the cruise, and it did not arrive before sailing. So we were missing quite a bit of the book. We did what she could, and she was having the package forwarded to SF so we could hopefully finish our pages later. I didn’t catch up to her for the class, so I met up with her on our last day and got some things. We are still missing one last page, I think, which she finally caught up to in Ketchikan of all places, so she will be mailing that one. My complete pages (the idea being that when I print my pics, the scrapbook will be all ready to just pop the pics into):

IMGP3126-1.jpg

So about 3:30 I called Jim on my our Wave phones, which are provided in our room and he said he was in the room, so I headed up there. More surprises greeted us.

Disney Bandaids
SF Treats – Denise, Jimmy and Ellen(?) I can’t read my writing now LOL!
A Jelly Belly Tin with our ship on it, with a Jelly Belly tour ticket, and some
Ghiradelli chocolate.

We headed to Wave Bands to see a cooking class, which by the way, was FREE! The tables were all full and they were kind of far in to the demo, so we just picked up a recipe and went to check out our photos in Shutters.

Jim has a habit on cruises of snagging cookies off the buffet and hiding them in his sock drawer for “just in case.” So we went to Goofy’s – no cookies, to BBB, no cookies on the buffet??? Hmmm, we looked in Cove Café – no luck. We looked at Parrot Cay at the lunch buffet with no luck. I stopped and asked a server about the cookies, and he sent someone into the kitchen to get a plate of cookies for Jim - not the giant RS ones, but the regular ones he loves - maybe he had to steal them from the Oceaneer's Club:confused3, but that stopped Jim from dashing in there and grabbing them from some poor little child having a snack!pirate: We were told we could request them any time and they would bring them.

We stopped by deck 9 to get some milk for Jim's cookies -While we were out on deck, we got a chance to do a walk-by with Minnie!

IMGP2687.jpg

Tonight was formal night, and we had ressies at Palo for 6:30, so we decided to skip the 4pm ship tour, take a nap and give ourselves time to be ready. Exciting, huh? You’d think we would at least play shuffleboard if we’re going to act like grandparents!

More goodies were waiting for us:
Patches , gum and tattoos – FanmanWDW
Braided bracelets, glow in the dark bracelets, Mickey Heads,
Some yummy recipes - CastawayCayFans

IMGP2685.jpg

There were lots of movies available on the TV, but it seemed our stateroom movies of the week seemed to be Life As We Know It, and Little Fockers. We put on a movie and I saw the sun shining through our West-facing porthole - right on the couch! I laid down in the sun and promptly fell asleep.

We woke up with just enough time to get ready, and we were on our way! I decided not to BYOB to Palo – just seemed to be pushing it a little  We don’t have a pic of us from this night – the photographer took it at the table, and the background wasn’t too good, so we didn’t buy it.

Palo:

IMGP2690.jpg

We were seated right away and had a nice table by the window:

IMGP2693.jpg

CONT NEXT POST:

Palo CONT:
We had a wonderful server, Shirley, I think. We ordered some lemon water to start, and looked over the menu. We were given a basket of breads and served the antipasto: Prosciutto, Bresaola, Parmesan Reggiano, Marinated Olives and Sun-dried Tomatoes

IMGP2691.jpg

IMGP2692.jpg

IMGP2694.jpg

We shared a Pizza: Al Gamberi
Tomato Sauce, Mozzarella, Shrimp, Asparagus It was delicious!

IMGP2695.jpg

We skipped the soup and salad course. I ordered a small side of lobster pasta:
Lobster and Mascarpone Ravioli
Freshly prepared served with a light Truffle Beurre Blanc

IMGP2697.jpg

And the Palo Tenderloin – Our Beef Tenderloin "Palo"
Served with Palo Signature Barola Red Wine Sauce or Gorgonzola Sauce

IMGP2698.jpg

I couldn’t decide which sauce I wanted, so she brought both! I think I like the Red Wine Sauce best with this. I also ordered a glass of Asti Spumante, just for fun. The pasta was pretty good, but the lobster was pretty tough actually. I was quite surprised at this.

Jim Had a baked Sea Bass, which I don’t see on the menu now. He didn’t care for it very much, actually. He felt the sauce or seasoning wasn’t too his liking.

IMGP2696.jpg

We had a palate cleanse of lemon sorbet – very refreshing!

For dessert, I ordered Chocolate Souflle of course!
Chocolate Soufflé
With Vanilla Bean and Chocolate Sauce

IMGP2700.jpg

This was good, but I think I liked my Grand Marinier Souffle from the night before better, which is crazy, cuz I love anything chocolate! Maybe I was just too full!

I also had an Espresso Martini, which was very sweet and rich, but be warned, the espresso was VERY STRONG – almost a little bitter, which worked nicely with the sweetness of the drink.

IMGP2701.jpg

Jim got Pistachio cake, I think. He didn’t enjoy this much, either.
There was a young couple next to us, and at one point, he said, “she keeps taking pictures of the food – she must be a food critic or something!” If I was a food critic, I would have to say the atmosphere and service were extraordinary, but we were really not blown away by the food. We both felt we had comparable dishes in the main dining rooms - we will try brunch sometime, but probably not pay an extra $40 for the same food we can get in the other rooms. With the removal of the Filet and some of the other items I've heard about, it just isn't that "signature" for us.

While we were waiting for our check, the head chef came out and introduced himself and asked the young couple if he could make something special just for them, and then asked us, too. He said something about Mozerella, so I was expecting maybe some broiled mozerella with a drizzle of apricot or something – we were in the dessert course – He brought a nice appetizer for the couple next to us – and then we got grilled mozerella on tomatoe slices drizzled with olive oil and balsamic vinegar. It probably would have been good, but not for dessert, really. The server said the chef had recently started doing that, and if was confusing the guests - she didn’t know why he kept doing that.

We signed our check and rolled out. It was almost time for the Golden Mickeys show, so I took my martini with me and we headed directly in to the theatre. We found great seats in the front of the 2nd section, right in the middle! It was a fun show, and they had changed it up since we saw it on the Magic, so I’m glad we went:

IMGP2702.jpg

IMGP2703.jpg

IMGP2704.jpg

IMGP2705.jpg

IMGP2706.jpg

After the show, we went to the room to freshen up, and found this guy:
IMGP2707.jpg

And more goodies:

Custom Carabiners and candy!

IMGP2708.jpg

A delicious family cookbook and some snacks!

IMGP2709.jpg

I poured myself a glass of wine and we headed to Wave Bands. In Effect was playing at 9:30. This was a pretty good blues and easy listening band. I had to laugh – they were pretty young, and they had a beautiful lead singer dressed in a nice evening dress. The room was only about ¼ full and it was all middle to old aged people. I could almost see her looking around and thinking, “Yeah, I’m a talented singer, and I’m on this stupid cruise ship, singing these old people….” :lmao:

We stayed to see the comedy of Michael Harrison,. He does ventriloquism, and he spent most of his time doing things with a tennis ball – really cute! After the show, we went in search of a late night snack. I can’t imagine why!

We found a buffet being set up in Diversions! We fixed a plate of cheeses and fruit and some little desserts and headed up to the cabin.

NEXT: A WEDDING AND A BRIDGE

sounds a little bit like a mixed experience at Palo, that's a bit of a bummer.

The rest of the day sounds really nice and mellow. I admit I do hope there are a lot more kids on our cruise, this one and the first Alaska seem to have hardly had any...which makes sense with school I guess.

Love that they were serving blue hawaiians!

. The knock on the door was promptly at 7:30! Ahhh, caffeine! Now this coffee is not Starbucks, but it is hot, it has caffeine in it, and I can just relax in my jammies and enjoy it! I ordered assorted pastries also.

Oh, Jim is good at getting me the free drink, too! At Olive garden, he always takes the taste and then pours it into my glass, so I get an full glass free!

Okay, maybe you're right about the drinks :lmao:

It was a really nice day - that's what I love about a cruise - you can so relax!

For those of you still reading, I wanted to just say that we are taking a 6 day weekend to the LA area for Caitllin's graduation, so I probably won't be posting another update until we get back! Until then, talk amongst yourselves - topic: Our next day is a day in San Francisco - guess if you will (There may be a smallish prize involved)

1. Did I stay up to watch the Royal Wedding?
2. Did I get my butt out of bed in time to be on deck for sailing under the GG Bridge?
3. Was my friend Deborah on time to pick us up?
4. What was our first activity of the day?
5. What iconic sight did we see 2nd?
6. What did we eat for lunch?
7. Where did we eat dinner?

Some of these may be hard - there are alot of famous sights in SF, you might go with your 2nd instinct this time, and remember I posted our plans somewhere a long time ago.

You might remember we had a day and a half here, so our time the first day was pretty unlimited....

I'm happy to be getting away - supposed to snow here again on Friday:eek:
Still thankful it's not tornadoes, but happy we are moving to AZ next year!

Have a wonderful weekend everyone! If you love your Freedom, thank a soldier!!!:thumbsup2

Hi Tammie, I'm still here, barely hanging on. I will try to call you soon! Too much to catch up on here...

If you love your Freedom, thank a soldier!!!:thumbsup2

oh goodness, I'll have to think on a few of those. AZ??? I missed that somehow. This winter would drive anyone to AZ!
