This was a last minute trip--we starting thinking about it about a month and a half ahead, and we booked only two weeks ahead of time. At first it was supposed to be an exceptionally cheap trip--4 nights, staying offsite and eating mostly CS. But somehow it manged to balloon to a 7 night stay at a Disney resort with 8 TS meals (;) as gf says, I always get my way!).

We still generally tried to be reasonable about how much we ordered and how expensive our TS meals were. We used the DDE (bought it a day before the trip) and came out about $3 ahead once we subtracted the price of the card from our total savings. We're planning another trip in August, so we'll probably be able to save a good amount more (although, we are crossing our fingers for free dining).

Our last trip (this past August) we were on the dining plan and enjoyed *almost* every minute of it--except those minutes when we so stuffed we thought we'd burst. It was kind of amazing this time to see how little food we actually needed at a meal in order to be full compared to how much we ate while on the DDP. So while we're really hoping for free dining for August, I'm not sure what we'd do if we had to buy it.

Here's our thinking.

Pros of DDP:
freedom to order anything w/out regard to price
ability to try more different things (i.e. 2 apps and 2 desserts instead of 1)
we averaged $70/day for food--just $10/day under the DDP

Pros of non-DDP
not so stuffed constantly
no pressure to get to every planned meal or spend all credits
ability to order things in any combination (i.e. 4 apps)
can get AP discount on rooms and don't need to buy tix in packages

Okay, enough of that boring stuff. On to the reviews! :)

Our flight got in on Wed 1/17 after midnight, so Thursday we woke up and were ready to go! Actually, we were pretty tired on Thursday since Wednesday was pretty stressful and long (but that's a story for the trip report, not the dining reviews). We got up at 9:30 and headed over to Everything Pop for some breakfast. We had big plans in this area--we brought packages of oatmeal for GF and travel-sized boxes of cereal for me. We were planning for GF to make her oatmeal in the microwave and for me to get some milk in a refillable mug for my cereal. GF ended up being lazy and tried to make the oatmeal with just hot water. She ended up with uncooked oatmeal soup. And it turned out that there was no milk in the refillable mug area, so I had to buy some. This was mostly bothersome because I had to wait in the lines at Pop which can be a bit long sometimes. GF didn't mind though as it gave her more time to enjoy her coffee--well, "enjoy" is probably the wrong word since she could hardly stomach the coffee; I guess "barely force down" is more like it.

A few hours later at Epcot we stopped at Sunshine Seasons for lunch. We'd eaten here before and thought it was a bit better than the average CS. GF opted for the beet salad with goat cheese and sugar toasted nuts. I had the veggie sandwich. (Sorry, no pics of this meal.) I remembered it as being a bit better than it was, but GF was pleased about the same as last time. She doesn't even like goat cheese, but she thought this particular kind must be especially mild and said it goes well with the other aspects of the salad so she didn't get the usual "goaty after-taste." My veggie sandwich was good, but I thought I remembered it being better. For some reason the veggies just didn't work as well for me this time. I tried to smother the sandwhich in mustard, but it didn't really help.

We also shared an iced tea and a dessert. Given the crowdedness of the area we felt a little pressured to quickly pick a dessert. That's always dangerous because for us choosing a dessert to share usually involves compromise. I love things that are chocolate and pretty sweet, and I'm not that into fruit based desserts (i.e. I crave chocolate peanut butter cups). GF, on the other hand, loves things that are less sweet and is a bigger fan of fruit in desserts (i.e. she craves peach cobbler). Her first thought was strawberry shortcake. Mine was some chocolate cake. We probably should have gone for the butterfinger cheesecake, since we both love cheesecake, but instead in the heat of the moment we agreed on key lime pie. Generally we both like key lime pie, but this one looked different than what we were used to. It had a meringue topping and the buttom part was yellow instead of green. It looked more like lemon meringue pie than key lime pie. Indeed, when we started eating it that's what it tasted like too. I couldn't taste lime at all. Luckily I like lemon meringue pie too, so it was okay with me.

Final word: We'll almost certainly be eating here again.

I cannot wait to read more, Thanks for the review!

Just an FYI, true Key Lime Pie should be yellow and not green as key limes are actually yellow inside and not green. Now the pie shouldn't be bright yellow, but a muted yellow color. If it's green, it's either not really key lime or they added food coloring.

Good reviews and tips so far. I liked your Pros & Cons list for the DDP.

Can't wait to read more - vegetarian her too so always like to hear what other veggies say.

Yeah!!! Veggie reviews. DH's an omnivore and DD and I are vegetarians so I love hearing a mixed review like this one.

After lunch at Sunshine Seasons we hopped over to Magic Kingdom. We did a few rides and then decided it was time for a snack. GF opted for a pineapple dole whip while I got a swirl. I was hoping for sprinkles—I love soft serve ice cream with sprinkles….yum!—but they didn’t have any :sad1: . We saw some folks who had pineapple and vanilla swirl and decided to mix some of my vanilla w/ GF’s pineapple. I liked the combination a lot better than pineapple alone—it’s just too acidic for me to have more than a spoonful. GF really likes the pineapple, but she thought the vanilla and pineapple swirl was pretty good too.

Our dinner reservation for that night was at Ohana sometime shortly after 8pm—I couldn’t remember the exact time and hadn’t brought the reservation list with us. We got tired at Magic Kingdom and decided we were done with rides for the day, but it was only a little before 6pm. We decided to just head over the Poly and see if they had anything sooner than our reservation (and find out exactly what time our reservation was).

We arrived at the Poly a little before 6:30pm and checked in. I told the hostess that we didn’t know when our reservation was and before I could finish the sentence about wanting to get in earlier she quickly said, “that’s okay, what’s the last name?” The area around the podium was full of folks who seemed to be waiting to get seated, so I definitely figured they wouldn’t have any room for us until our reservation time. The hostess found us in the system, but instead of telling us our reservation time as I expected, she just asked us “any allergy or diet restrictions?” I told her I was a vegetarian and she started to type this into the computer. She stopped after a few letters and asked, “how do you spell that?” I was a little confused about what was going on—was she checking us in 2 hours early thinking we wanted to wait in the lounge area that long? Or was she going to get us in earlier? In my confusion (well, that’s what I’m going to blame it on anyway! ) I failed miserably to spell “vegetarian”. GF interrupted my failed attempt: “Uh, honey, that’s not right.” Another hostess standing nearby overheard us having trouble and took over the keyboard from the first hostess, apparently typing “vegetarian” whether spelled correctly or not. This second hostess then handed me a beeper and said to come back when it beeped. I was still confused—they never said that we’d be able to get in early. So I asked how long it would be and she said 15-20 minutes. I thought, hey how lucky! I totally hadn’t expected that we’d be able to get in early. :woohoo:

We thought we’d spend a few minutes outside before it got close to our time to be beeped. I took a look at the pool and GF found an area free of people to have a cigarette. Then we went back inside and sat downstairs since the upstairs seating area was so full—along with all of the standing area near the walls. The beeper was still flashing green, which I assumed meant it was within range, and I remembered that during our last trip we got the same kind of beeper at Boma and it started beeping at me when I went out of range. We waited until about 20 minutes after we checked in and decided to go upstairs to make sure the beeper was working on the 1st floor. It was really crowded up there and there was no where to comfortably sit or stand w/out being in someone’s way. We waited another 10 minutes or more and GF decided to ask about the beeper—this was around 7 pm and we’d been waiting about 30 minutes. The hostess GF talked to said that it turned out we’d be eating closer to our original reservation time—30 to 45 minutes later—because there were still 10 people in front of us. She didn’t explain why we were told 15 or 20 minutes and now it turned out it would take more like an hour and 15 minutes and GF didn’t push the issue.

Needless to say, we weren’t very happy. How could there be 10 people in front of us when 30 minutes ago, there was apparently almost no one in front of us? We started to wonder if someone just messed up when they told us 15-20 minutes. Maybe the person who told us that didn’t realize that our reservation was for so much later? Maybe as people checked in for reservation times earlier than ours we just kept getting bumped back over and over? Of course it would have been totally understandable if they couldn’t get us in early, but it would have been good if we had been told that up front. We went back downstairs feeling somewhat annoyed and tried to make small talk. We both were getting pretty hungry so we went through the bag we carried and found some granola bars and such. GF was still starving even after a granola bar.

Once we’d been waiting another 40 minutes or so, we went back upstairs to check again. I waited in line for at least another 10 minutes before it was my turn at the podium. While I was waiting I saw another couple bypass the line at the podium and approach a hostess from the side. The hostess talked to them and then grabbed a manager and they began looking at the computer together. I heard the hostess say that the couple had been waiting almost 2 hours and their beeper hadn’t gone off, but she couldn’t find their reservation. The manager quickly found it, but as he read it out loud I thought he said that the party was listed as already having been seated. He then turned to the couple and apologized and brought them right back to the dining area to be seated. Witnessing this only made me more convinced that there was something weird going on with their system.

When I finally got to the podium, I told the hostess that we were told 15-20 minutes and had been waiting almost an hour and a half. I gave her the name and she looked us up. She cheerfully said, “Oh, we paged you already. We couldn’t find you.” Exasperated, I asked, “What?!” She asked, “Were you downstairs?” And when I said yes, she replied “That’s why. The pagers don’t work downstairs. We paged you….I want to say….maybe 45 minutes ago.” GF came over at this point and I told her what the hostess said. She looked just as exasperated. The hostess must have noticed our frustration, as she quickly said, “Well don’t worry. You’re still in the system. We’ll seat you as soon as possible.” As she began to print something out, GF pointed out that 45 minutes earlier was almost exactly the time when she checked about the beeper the first time. So how could they have paged us then, given she would have been standing right at the podium?! She made this point to the hostess who simply insisted that they had paged us at some point and the beeper doesn’t work downstairs. As we walked a few steps away, I suggested that maybe the hostess was off in her estimate—maybe they paged us 40 minutes before, when we would have just gotten downstairs. Except, as GF pointed out, that would have been 5 minutes after she had just been told it would be 30-45 MORE minutes until we were beeped. How could they have found us a spot that quickly?

Needless to say, we were feeling a bit annoyed. We had been hoping to see Wishes—either while eating dinner if we were on that side of the restaurant, or outside just before checking in for dinner. But it turned out that I was waiting in line at the podium during almost all of Wishes, which we could barely glimpse out of the window behind the bar. Plus, we were pretty hungry at this point.

Someone came over to seat us a few minutes later and led us to a table set for two—one seat was a chair, one was a booth. On both sides of the table were similar tables. One was about 5 inches away. The other was more like 9 inches away. The table itself was significantly longer than a usual table so GF and I commented that we felt extremely far away from each other. A minute later people were seated at the table to our left and then next at the table to our right. Just trying to talk to GF was difficult because both of us are used to talking pretty loudly to each other. We felt like we had to scream in order to hear each other. And we could hear every word of our neighbor’s conversation given they were 5 inches away. Also, GF was sitting in the booth part and couldn’t arrange the table so that she didn’t have to bend over to reach things on the table and this was hurting her back already. I said deflatedly, “Well at least it’s all served family style so we can just eat quickly and then leave ASAP.” GF replied, “I don’t want to eat quickly and run out of here. I want to have a nice dinner. Maybe we can get them to move us.” I was sure they wouldn’t be able to given we had just waited an hour and a half for the table we had. Luckily, since Wishes had just ended people started leaving the tables closest to the windows and our server was able to move us though—thank goodness!

Our 2nd table was close to the meat grilling area and right on the edge of the carpet—a table for three. We were much happier right away and out came the first bits of food—woo hoo—drinks, wontons, and salad. (Sorry, we goofed and forgot to take pics of this meal!) I loved the peanut sauce  —I want some right now! It was GF’s favorite of the three as well. We also liked the orange sauce, but thought the green was a little strange. GF described it as tasting kind of like salad dressing. We ate a good amount of the wontons and salad right away, and I started worrying that I was going to get too full way too fast. Next came the shrimp and wings which GF dug into. She loved the shrimp and ate the entire bowl herself. After that were potatoes and veggies. We both loved the potatoes  —the best thing at the meal. And then my vegetarian entrée arrived. It was a veggie and udon noodle stir fry with miso broth in a tea press to pour over it. It was very good, but I wished there were more noodles.

By this point we’d been eating for awhile, and I wondered if GF would have any room at all for meat since she was devouring the shrimp and potatoes. She could never remember the name Ohana so she’d been referring to it as “the meat on sticks place” yet no sticks had made their way to our table. Eventually our server did bring a little meat, but he didn’t come by all that often. Luckily gf was so full that she really didn’t need much meat. We ended up asking for more potatoes and wontons—like anyone needs more food after a feast like that! During the meal the entertainment started. I had not told GF that Ohana was kind of like Whispering Canyon with regard to children’s activities. After yelling “Alooooohaaaaaa” in a scratchy voice, the entertainer called all the children up to play kick the coconut. Their starting line was about one foot away from our table. Next was singing happy birthday and a few other things. Maybe a half hour later she was back again, this time the limbo. Though we could have done without kick the coconut, GF and I agreed that watching little kids limbo was actually pretty cute. I just wonder how any of those kids could be so flexible after such a huge meal! Last came dessert—pineapple bread pudding with bananas foster sauce and vanilla ice cream. Yummy—we easily ate it all. GF didn’t need much of the sauce—she was happy with a less sweet version with just the ice cream. I, however, poured on the sauce; it was the best part!

And finally completely stuffed, we left. Gf and I were both really pleased by the food. In fact, we thought more and more highly of it as the days went on since a couple other of our meals were more mediocre. We’re definitely going to go back in the future. The only downside is that people who can’t control themselves (like us!) will hurt themselves with so much food.

GF's slogan: "Meat on sticks, oh my!"
Food: :thumbsup2 We’re definitely going back here. In fact, I wish I could go back right now!
Atmosphere: Noisy with all of the meat grilling and the children’s activities. And there’s always the possibility of getting “picked on” by the entertainers.
Service: Great servers, but clearly some problems at the hostess podium.

Our second full day in Disney we went to Animal Kingdom for the morning and early afternoon. A bit after 11 we decided to get some lunch. I had noticed that the DDE card applied to a couple of counter services places in AK--Pizzafari, Tusker House, and Flame Tree Barbecue I think. At every other park only TS places were listed. Though Everything Pop was also listed, and I think the food courts at the other Value Resorts were as well. I guess the thinking is that if there are no or very few TS restaurants available at a certain park or resort, then the card ought to apply to the CS places there. :woohoo:

We were near the front of the park and needed something with vegetarian options, so we picked Pizzafari. I had already been thinking that this would be a couple option because we could share a few things here. During this trip we were determined not to be so full all the time (like we were when using the DDP) and sharing definitely helps with that. :thumbsup2

We decided to share one cheese pizza, an order of breadsticks, a side caesar salad, and a large iced tea.

HPIM0881.jpg

The pizza was actually pretty good for theme park pizza. A bit too much sauce for our tastes, but better than we expected. The breadsticks could have been better. They were just not that exciting. The salad was okay, but there's a noticable difference between a good caesar salad and a medicore one--this was the latter kind.

Still, we went away full and happy, and pretty amazed that we could be satisfied with so little food.

Food: Given the lack of vegetarian options in AK and the options for sharing things here, we'll likely be back (only when we're not using the DDP, though).

Next up: A somewhat disappointing meal at Rose & Crown

Just an FYI, true Key Lime Pie should be yellow and not green as key limes are actually yellow inside and not green. Now the pie shouldn't be bright yellow, but a muted yellow color. If it's green, it's either not really key lime or they added food coloring.

Huh I didn't realize key lime pie should be yellow. I guess I've always had the kind with food coloring. Thanks for the info :)

We had a reservation at Rose & Crown for 7:20 pm. In part we decided on this restaurant because of the Illuminations viewing and in part because it seemed to have some yummy sounding meat options for GF. As we walked through Epcot to the UK part of World Showcase we saw that people were already starting to crowd around for Illuminations--wow...I don't think I could stand around waiting for more than 10 minutes prior to such a show. We checked in and were given a beeper. They told us to please stay in the UK so the beeper would work. (How can their beeper work in the entire UK section of Epcot, yet Ohana's beeper doesn't work just 20 feet below the podium? :confused3 ) I asked if there was any chance of getting a window seat. The host told me that they couldn't guarantee it because they seated people according to whatever table was first available, but they did gurantee that all of their diners would get to see Illuminations.

We took a seat on a nearby curb and waited a little less than 10 minutes until the beeper went off. We were escorted inside to a seat by a window. The table was a little bit like the one at Ohana--one seat was a booth attached to the wall and one was a chair and the tables next to us were somewhat closer than usual. Still, it was a lot better than the first table at Ohana, so we were happy with it.

GF and I decided to split the fruit and cheese plate for an appetizer. She got cottage pie for her entree and I got a salad and potato and leek soup. The only vegetarian entree on the menu was veggies in phylo dough with curry and mustard sauce. I thought this entree would either be really good or really unappetizing depending on whether it was well done. I didn't want to take the chance on the latter, so I opted for soup and salad instead.

The cheese plate had two kinds of cheese--one I believe was 5 county and one (the green block) which I don't remember but GF said tasted like herbs. I liked both of the cheeses, but didn't love them. GF couldn't eat much of the green one because she doesn't like herbs very much. There was also a blue cheese croissant and a stilton biscuit which were tasty, but I would have rather just had more cheese. There were also strawberries, grapes, apples, some type of jelly I think, and sugar toasted nuts. We ate up the nuts (we love them!) and had a bit of the fruit, but we were really more interested in the cheese. Also, it didn't come with any crackers which we thought was odd. But luckily there were dinner rolls.

HPIM0882.jpg

HPIM0884.jpg

GF said she wouldn't bother to get the cheese plate again. I probably would though, although I don't think we'll be going back to Rose and Crown again any time soon.

During our meal we saw two groups near us get dreams--you know, year of a million dreams. The server delivered sometype of strawberry dessert to the woman sitting next to us and told her happy b'day. We overheard a bit of the conversation and the server said it was a dream. The woman seemed confused and not all that excited. She asked if the dessert was something that's not on the regular menu which it wasn't. A little while later we saw another couple nearby receive the same thing and heard them mention an anniversary. With all that going on our server didn't seem to check on us very often, but luckily we didn't really need anything.

GF's cottage pie arrived and looked good. Last year she had ordered one at Ragland Road and did not enjoy it, so she was hoping this one would be better. Thankfully, it was. I helped myself to some of the cheese covered mashed potatoes on top and the green beans that accompanied it. GF said the entree was good, but she just didn't think it was worth price--especially not compared to the kind of food we had just had at Ohana the night before.

HPIM0887.jpg

My salad arrived looking a bit disppointingly plain. I should have read the menu more closely because the menu said "stilton cheese or mustard dressing" but I thought it had said there was stilton cheese on the salad. Oops. It was a pretty large portion as far as appetizer salads go, but it was just lettuce and some tomatoes. Nothing special.

HPIM0885.jpg

My potato and leek soup was more interesting. I was excited to get soup because so many soups at restaurants have meat in them. I didn't bother asking if this one had some kind of chicken of beef based broth (couldn't taste it if it did) because almost all restaurant soups do, and I've just given in on that. The soup was very creamy, which I kind of enjoyed, but GF thought it was more cream than she would have been able to handle. We both agreed it was too salty. Still I enjoyed it a good amount.

HPIM0886.jpg

GF finished off her entire entree and was pretty full. I had eaten less than half my salad but was still pretty full having eaten a lot of bread and cheese and all of my soup. We had been planning to get dessert, but nothing on the menu struck us and we didn't have that much room left. We had also decided to go to Downtown Disney after dinner by way of the boat from World Showcase to the Boardwalk or Beach Club and then a bus from there. When I heard we'd be going near the Beach Club I thought, "hey, what a great time to get a no way jose sundae!" (I just love the peanut butter sauce!) so that took care of the dessert needs.

We still had over 20 minutes til Illuminations so when our server cleared our plates and we told him we didn't need dessert, he said he'd just leave us alone for a bit before he took us out to the viewing area. A few minutes later GF decided she wanted some coffee and tried to flag him down, but she was never able to catch his eye. After another almost 15 minutes he brought the bill and by then GF figured she could just get coffee at Beaches and Cream. After running my room charge he left me to sign the receipt and started to take the large group at the table next to us out to the viewing area. As they started on their way out he made a hissing sound "psst" at me and said "let's go!" and motioned for us to follow. This was while I was trying to figure out what tip to leave and to do the addition :rolleyes1 I hurried that up and tried to follow. I don't know why it was such a big deal that we followed. The viewing area was right there once you got outside.

We headed down and were surprised at how small the area was. There was already a group of people who filled in all the space by the railing, so we took a spot behind them. Unfortunately a couple of these folks were pretty tall, and one of them had a child on his shoulders while another was holding a video camera high over her head once Illuminations started. We only watched for a few minutes because GF wasn't enjoying the close quarters with people who kept bumping into her and she got a little bored when nothing was happening except the ball turning some colors. I didn't mind either way so we just started walking toward the boat to the Epcot resorts. It was kind of lucky that we left because we were close to the front of the line for the boat, whereas if we'd waited we probably would have been left standing there for quite some time.

GF's slogan for Rose & Crown: "Pleasant, but unremarkable."
Food: We're likely not going back. Too expensive for entrees that weren't that impressive to us. Not great options for vegetarians either.
Atmosphere: Tables a little too close together and a bit loud. I think we would have enjoyed an outdoor table much more.
Service: Not great, but we were happy with it.

After Rose & Crown it was over to the Beach Club to transfer to Downtown Disney, with a stop for ice cream at Beaches and Cream. GF and I stopped at the podium outside the shop and we're told about a 20 to 30 minute wait. GF was already not all that excited about going to Beaches and Cream (she was really just indulging me), so I was sure she was not going to want to wait up to a half hour just for me to have a sundae. So I was a little bit disappointed :sad1: I told the hostess, "We need a minute to think" and we tried to step a bit away from the podium.

However, just as we began to step away and look at one another to decide what to do, a man who was standing near the podium walked over to us and began talking to us. He was very clearly drunk and said something like, "Paula (the Beaches and Cream hostess) will take care of you. She's from ______(somewhere, I don't remember where), Paula. She's a good one" in a slurred voice. The hostess looked at us with a face that said, "Oh God, please help me and make this drunken man stop leaning all over my podium and bothering me." We just smiled at the guy, and he began asking us about how our vacation was going. Soon we were involved in a conversation in which we had to answer every question twice because within 30 seconds he'd forget what we said. Eventually he asked where we were from and we said "Michigan." He replied "Fantastic" in a drunken way and suddenly another drunk seeming man behind us turned around and excitedly said, "Nantastic--you're from Natastic?" (Did he mean Nantucket?) Drunk man #1 said, "No, they're from Michigan." Drunk man #2 replied, "Massachusetts?" (Apparently these were New Englanders :lmao: ) We repeated again: "Michigan." "Oh" he said. He no longer seemed interested. By this point Paula (the hostess) had come back to the podium after having been inside the restaurant for awhile and after having seated a group that had been waiting. She interrupted and told us, "there's an available table now." Yea! We said we'd take it right away. I can't say we were sad to have to leave the drunk people who wished us well.

Inside we had a server who told us she was in training--that many years ago in her youth she had been a server and now she was going back to it. We ordered just a coffee for GF and a No Way Jose sundae for me (mostly). We asked to have the peanut butter sauce on the side and got an extra bowl so GF could have some with the peanut butter. It worked out well, although GF didn't eat much of it, so I hate til I felt a little sick and there was still a lot left.

I absolutely love peanut butter on/in ice cream and I'm always disappointed that so few ice cream places will do peanut butter sundaes. Since this time the peanut butter was on the side we made a point to taste it itself to see if we could figure out what it is from taste and texture--we were thinking it was some special sauce specifically for ice cream. Turned out, though, that it was just melted peanut butter. I've been known to add some peanut butter to ice cream once in awhile, but I hadn't realized that just heating it up could make a sundae topping. Good to know!

GF was also happy I learned about this. She figured now that I could have peanut butter sauce anytime I wanted at home we wouldn't have to bother going to Beaches and Cream again just for me to get that sundae :rolleyes1

Food: We might not be going back soon, but only because GF doesn't like being forced to share my peanut butter sundae :)

Our second day in Disney we went to MGM for a few hours knowing that we had a lunch reservation at Grand Floridian Cafe at 1:40 pm. We got over there just in time and were feeling hungry (though we had a hot pretzel, coffee, and a brownie at MGM to hold us over ;) ). GF had never been at the Grand Floridian before (she'd only seen it from inside the monorail) and she admitted it was much prettier in person. We noticed on this trip that, at least at night, the deluxes (except for the Boardwalk) were wonderfully peaceful. We had sat out on rocking chairs at the Beach club for quite awhile the night before with no one around. Before being seated I took a quick trip to the restroom and noticed a significant difference between the toilet paper there and the toilet paper at Pop. I guess that's why the room rates are so cheap at Pop :rotfl: (Seriously, GF I have significant needs from toilet paper, as you might know if you came across her "What do you do with your toilet paper?" thread.)

Once I emerged from the restroom we were seated right away. We thought the look of the restaurant was kind of fancy. I'd been to 1900 Park Fare a number of times and never got this feeling and figured given the prices weren't that expensive, it wouldn't have a fancy feel to it. But it was themed to go along with the decoration of the rest of the Grand Floridian.

We had heard pretty good things about Grand Floridian Cafe and were interested in their mini-desserts....I like the idea of getting to try a lot of little things. We were thinking of going for dinner, but entrees were just a little expensive, so we agreed to lunch. When we got there, though, we were both in an indecisive mood and didn't know what to order. Even though GF is a meat-eater and I'm not we often share entrees and appetizers (she sacrifices for me :) ). Part of me wanted to share some appetizers here and another part of me wanted a lunch that had a little more substance to it. We debated and eventually decided to just each get our own thing. GF decided on the soup (french onion) and sandwich (chicken salad) combo partly because she knew I had a hankering for french onion .

I decided on the veggie burger, which sounded more interesting than move veggie burgers: "burger of quinoa, chickpeas, and fresh herbs with tofu tzatziki and sun-dried tomato tapenade".

My burger came with fries and after it was dropped off I thought, "ah, ketchup." I looked around, though, and didn't see a ketchup bottle on anyone else's table :confused3 A few minutes later the server came by to check on us and without my prompting offered to go get some ketchup. She came back with two little ceramic cups full. GF said, "I knew this wasn't the kind of place that would give you ketchup in a bottle." We both agreed that unless we're at a restaurant like the California Grill, we enjoy casualness (especially at lunch time).

GF and I shared the french onion soup which was good (but we had some that was way better at Chefs de France later in the trip). She said her chicken salad was comforting in "you know what you're going to get" kind of way, but that wasn't all that impressive for a $14 entree. My veggie burger was definitely interesting, but I didn't find it bold enough in its flavors and didn't like the texture very much. The burger itself seemed homemade and had a texture that was very soft such that it fell apart easily. I probably shouldn't have ordered this knowing my taste in veggie burgers--I prefer Boca burgers which have a smoked or meaty taste and hold together really well over things like Garden burgers which are just made and flavored like vegetables and grains. I think I'd been taken in a bit by the mention of tzatziki on the menu...though now I see it says tofu tzatziki. I'm not even sure what that is. I thought they meant the yummy greek cucumber yogurt flavored dip which I love, but I can't say I tasted that at all on the burger. Maybe they made it with tofu instead of yogurt and it tasted very different :confused3

Our server came over to clear our plates and asked if we wanted dessert. She indicated that, if so, she needed to put the order in quickly before the kitchen closed. We had been planning to try all (or almost all) of the mini-desserts, but we were too full for that. So we decided to just try tiramisu and key lime pie.

The desserts were delivered by someone other than our server, and as they left we realized we didn't have any silverware. Luckily about a minute later our server walked by and we asked her for forks as well as drink refills (they'd been empty for some time). She brought the forks quickly, but no drinks. The desserts were both yummy. GF doesn't even like tiramisu most of the time, but she did like this one. The key lime pie was also good (and we could taste the lime in this one!) although we didn't understand the chocolate crust :confused3.

It was only when she brought the check that our server finally brought our refills. Of course, by then we didn't need them.

Food: We probably wouldn't go back here. It wasn't anything special and it was kind of expensive for what it was (except for the desserts).
Atmosphere: Too fancy for our tastes.
Service: Eh, not great, but no big complaints.
