I have a question. If we wanted to barrow points but were a few short, could we buy the one time use points after we borrowed?

It doesn't seem like you would be allowed to that you are only able to do one time use points if you currently have points in your current use year.

It is sort of confusing.

If you need additional points in order to place a reservation, you can purchase (subject to limitations) One-Time-Use Vacation Points. You can purchase OTU points as an alternative to or in addition to borrowing points.

ok so say I needed 96 points and had 94 to barrow, I could barrow 94 then pay for the 2 points cash?

Yes.

As a Disney Vacation Club Member, occasionally you may find yourself in need of just few extra vacation points in order to book that perfect dream vacation. Previously, this required borrowing vacation points from a future use year, but very recently a new alternative was introduced. They're called "one-time-use" vacation points and are available for a fee of $15 ($13.33 plus $1.67 tax) per vacation point. Availability of one-time-use vacation points may be limited or suspended from time to time, and the fee is subject to change.
Details:
  • One-time-use vacation points are vacation points available for Disney Vacation Club Members to use as an alternative to borrowing vacation points from the following use year's allotment.
  • You can obtain a maximum of 24 one-time-use vacation points once per use year per membership.
  • A maximum of 24 one-time-use vacation points are processed in a single transaction, not multiple transactions.
  • The fee for one-time-use vacation points is $15 (including tax) per vacation point, and is subject to change.
  • One-time-use vacation points expire according to the use year of the reservation booked and are non-refundable, non-transferable and cannot be banked or borrowed.
  • One-time-use vacation points are not available for waitlist reservations.
  • One-time-use vacation points cannot be applied retroactively to existing reservations.
  • One-time-use vacation points are only available for Members whose contract is closed and in good standing.
  • One-time-use vacation points are available only for Disney Vacation Club Resorts, Disney Collection*, and World Collection reservations.
    * Available when you purchase directly from Disney.
  • One-time-use vacation points used for Disney Vacation Club resort reservations can only be used up to 7 months prior to arrival.
  • One-time-use vacation points for Disney Collection and World Collection reservations can be used according to the booking guidelines for each individual collection.

The reason I ask is because it says it is an alternative to borrowing. So I wasn't sure if you can barrow and then buy.

I believe what they mean by that statement is that you can purchase OTU points even if you have points available to be borrowed. You have the option to leave some/all of your borrowable points untouched and purchase OTU points instead.

It does not mean that borrowing points or having points available to be borrowed makes you ineligible to purchase OTU points.

Also realize that the One-Time-Use points cannot be purchased to complete a reservation made using the 11 month reservation priority - they can only be purchased when making a reservation within 7 months of arrival.

What happens when you cancel a reservation that includes 1 time use points? Do they show up as available in your pool of points if you want to rebook later online? Or do you have to call to reuse them? Or are they lost?

If a reservation made using OTU points is later canceled, those points may be reused but will NOT show up online. You would need to call MS to reuse them. They cannot be banked and will expire at the end of the Use Year if not used for another reservation.

Thanks!

Are the one time use points covered by insurance if purchased? I needed 6 points to complete a planned trip. I already had purchased the insurance covering my years points but now I have added the extra 6. Are all points used for that trip covered?

One-time-use points are not mentioned in the PDF you can download from the MS website. http://advc.disney.go.com/media/dvc...ning/travelex/DVC_Travelex_Info_V4_011613.pdf

However, I believe the insurance is good for a calendar year and covers all trips taken during that year. To be safe I would call Travelex and ask them. The Travelex phone number is on the PDF in link above.

The way it was explained to me by Member Services, the insurance covers your points from a use year, not your trips during that year. If you have a trip that uses banked, current, and borrowed points, you would have to buy the insurance for each of those three use years for that trip to be completely covered.

I wouldn't assume OTU points are covered by the policy unless that's specifically spelled out in the agreement. (Which I don't think it is.) Even for your own points, the only thing the insurance pays out is the value of that year's maintenance fees. Most maintenance fees are (roughly) in the $5 - $7 range. There's nothing as high as the $15 fee for OTU points. I guess it's never safe to assume, but none the less, I would assume the maximum cost of $360 for OTU points would be a sunk cost in an insurance claim circumstance. As recommended above, though, the only way to know for sure is to call and ask.
