One time use points question

We have never purchased them so I was wondering, let's say you have 5 nights booked right now and realized you want to book one more night and add it to the end but you need a few more points,
can you just call MS and buy points for the one night? Or does this have to happen when you book the original 5 nights?

As long as the night you want to book is 7 months out, then you can use them,

Since you already have 5 nights, you may be able to get them for 7 months from check in of the start of the trip.
