I'm looking at booking a studio for Food & Wine (10/31-11/4/2019) and would like to purchase 24 OTU points to help offset my points usage. I'll also be booking a 1 bedroom for Marathon Weekend 2020 (1/8-1/13/2020) and would like to purchase 24 OTU points then as well.

I've got a December UY, since my points refresh between my two prospective trips, would I be able to purchase OTU points for both?

Thanks!!

Yes, you can purchase them once per use year and your trips are in two different use years (when you will be using the points determines the issue not when you call to reserve). However, you can only purchase them beginning at 7 months out and you may face serious availability issues at 7 months out for the times you want.

OTUPs are a maximum of 24 points per UY. Since your trips would fall in different UYs, you can buy up to 24 points for each trip. Just be aware that OTUPs cannot be refunded or banked. If you cancel that Oct/Nov trip, you won't have much in the way of opportunity to use those points.

They can't be purchased until 7 months out, right? I would be worried that if you wait much longer you won't get a room for W&D.

Couldn't the OP borrow points from the following year to make the reservation, update the reservation with the OTUP at 7 months and then bank the current use year points to the following UY to replace the borrowed points needed to hold the reservation.

Note: I know that borrowed points cannot be banked - my suggestion is that the current UY points that are freed up by the OTUP be banked.

This is what I was Wondering as well but couldn’t figure out how to explain it.

You can't work around the home resort advantage by replacing home resort points with OTUPs at the 7-month mark. The villa would have to be available at 7 months and the original reservation would have to be cancelled first and then booked with points and OTUPs. So, there's no advantage to borrowing points in this case.

I’m not sure what resort you are trying to book but your priority should be the November reservation. One bedrooms in January will be slightly easier to book at 7 months (but as always, with Star Wars, all bets are off...)

He cannot. He has a Dec use year and wants a reservation in Oct into Nov. this is less than 4 months out. You can only bank 4 months or longer than your use year. So his last day to bank is July 31.

Thank you for the responses!!! I'm definitely aware of how busy DVC is during the fall (that weekend in particular since it's Wine & Dine Half Marathon Weekend), my question was more whether or not it was something I'd be able to do if the availability presented itself...Opportunity is unlikely but stranger things have happened:-)
