Strange follow-up question:

If I buy OTUP to use with transferred points (which have a different UY than the membership they are transferred into), but cancel the reservation... which UY do they go into? Do they stay with the transferred points & their UY, or do they become a product of the UY of my membership?? (I hope my Q makes sense!)

They will be in the UY you are booking the trip. It doesn’t matter which other points were used with it.

If I book a night in February 2021 using my Feb UY points, I would be using Feb ‘21 UY... but if I book that night using my Apr UY points, I would be using Apr ‘20 UY... which is why I can’t combine my Feb & Apr points for a stay in Feb or Mar- they would never be in the same use year. So, if I have transferred some Apr points into my Feb account, but bought OTUP to use with my Apr points... how would the OTUP points be designated for a Feb or March res??

Points go into the membership where the reservation is. So, if you book the trip in your Feb UY membership, and buy OTU points for that trip, then they are now part of that.

It doesn’t matter if you have transferred in April UY points to use as well..once transferred they are part of your Feb UY membership...but follow their own rules still for banking and expiration.

So, you can use Feb 2021 points, April 2020 transferred points, and OTU points all in one reservation as part of your Feb UY, and if canceled, those points will still be there.

Just remember that both OTU and transferred points can not be used or modified online...a call to MS is required.

ETA: Even if you were booking a trip in a month that overlaps.for example May 21, you would still not be able to combine points for a single reservation from Your two different UYs without a transfer.

Interesting. So far I’ve not tried using different point types on one res, but as I was trying to understand it MS stressed to me that the UY has to match (all 2020 or all 2021). Was she wrong?? Is this an issue of getting different answers from different MS agents? Have you successfully booked that way?

Two UYs are different memberships and the only way to use points from both is a transfer. Without it, you can book some nights on one and some on the other,

I think we had a little disconnect there. I understand how transfers work. My question is how OTUPs work in combination with transferred points.

I currently own 2 UY and have never combined points via transfer before. I haven’t wanted to. I use them as totally separate accounts. Anyway, I just purchased UY #3 and had current points transferred to us prior to closing (so I could use them during my new home resort priority window). But, now I find myself in an unusual place and would like to use OTUP with the transferred points for a res that I’m not being allowed to combine with my Feb points (per MS declaring the same use year must be used to combine at 7 months). I’ve already made reservations (by calling MS) with nearly all those points, but I’ve got a few left and want to make sure I use them all.

I just wanted to know if anyone has ever done this and has firsthand experience with it. Thanks!

I think you are right...I am confused. I do know that they cannot use transferred points if borrowed or banked points exist.

I have used transferred points and OTU points in the same reservation..It was for a night this past June.

It was part of my Dec 2019 UY, and had transferred June 2020 UY points...that I transferred before I sold the contract, and a few OTU points I needed to complete it.

When that got canceled, both the OTU and transferred points went back and I just used those, along with new banked points I have to secure my October trip...which is still part of my Dec 2019 UY.

So, that trip is booked with banked 2018 points, OTU points, and June 2020 UY transferred points. It worked because all of those points are now in my Dec UY membership.

Thank you! That’s exactly what I was looking for and I kinda felt like I had been given incorrect info from MS about combining points. As long as they’re all in the same membership- they should be able to be used together, as your example demonstrates.

No, I have not... and hopefully I won’t have to now! I just want to have a full understanding of it before I talk with MS again. I like being prepared
