Before we left for this trip we came upon some unexpected money and DH and I decided to use it to enhance the vacation, but we were unsure exactly how we were going to do that. What was worthy of the extra money? It couldn't be just a meal, maybe Cirque, maybe the Luau. We kept tossing things around, finally one night after the kids had gone to sleep I asked how DH felt about having to go to work Monday after having driven for the day on Sunday? See we were supposed to Drive on Friday and the other haf on Saturday so he'd have a day to sleep a bit before returning to work. He said he didn't mind and we decided to surprise the kids with a Savannah view room at AKL for one extra night. I booked a Regular savannah view room and was pleased they could apply the AP discount at such late notice.
On Friday we got up and hurried the kids to get ready to head home. Stopped at MGM to pick up a few things and ride TOT once more. Once int he car DH asks me if I want to stop to look around at AKL since I had mentioned that earlier in the vacation. The kids are clueless still! We "checked out" the AKL and I sent the kids to the lavatory to go one more time before we headed home. I checked in and to my surprise the room was ready and I was given a Deluxe Savannah View room. I met the kids at the lavatory with a map and told them to follow me because the CM told me there was a better view this way. oNce i stopped at a room and entered they were a little disconcerted. I opened up and said "Surprise want to stay for the night!"
DD9 was so happy she is a science and animal freak and she was hugging me and weping and DH 12 too cool for all of that just said "for real". Both were very happy.
The room was large and roomy, though the decor makes it on the darker side. The balconies are very big-- all four of us fit comfortably on it taking photos, pointing out animals and facts as well as just taking in the beauty of the view. The staff was exceptionally helpful, and many very chatty. What a wonderful way to end our vacation and a once in a lifetime way to spend those few extra dollars we had.
Because they only have one pool here, it gets very crowded, but not unmanageable. there are different crafts to do each day and you will get the times and prices as well as location at check in. On Saturday it was African rag doll making for $10--I wanted to but DD wanted to watch the Zebras. She won. We had luch at Mara, though a little on the slow side the food was fresh and tasty. Not too many choices, but it was enough to keep everyone happy. For dinner I made a PS to Jiko and we enjoyed a wonderful dinner. If I had the opportunity I would book this resort again for a longer stay. We did not use any transportation since we stayed at the resort enjoying the amenities as well as the beautiful view of the Savannnah.
