Mono-pod or tri-pod?

I bought a mono-pod for christmas, and then my neighbor gave me a tripod that he wasn't using anymore.

Only problem with the tri-pod is that the head doesn't flip up so I can take pictures vertically.

Bonus for the mono-pod...quick release.

Decisions, decision, decisions.

OP, I've never used a mono pod, just tripod. If the crowds aren't too bad in March I would just go with the tripod (if it's not too big and heavy).

Take both, monopod for the day, tripod for the night. The typical fireworks photo (long trailing fireworks) requires about a 2 second exposure, more than a monopod is usually good for.

Action photos with a long lens work better with a monopd for the flexibility. Also photos of shows like Lion King are well suited to a monopod.

Stash the tripod in a locker during the day. Don't forget a remote release.

I carried both one trip and left the monopod behind the last two trips and it won't be coming with me next trip, either.

You can always use a tripod as a monopod by just extending a single leg (though it is admittedly a bit bulkier), and the monopod is just not good enough for long-exposure shots like you'll probably want to be taking at night.

I would want quick release on the tripod, though... I move my ball head between the two as needed.
