One night in NYC, what to do?

My family and I will be traveling to New York in a couple of weeks, about an hour north of NYC.

The wife and kids want to head down to the city for a few hours of sight seeing on a Friday night. Any suggestions on must-see or family-oriented things to see? I've been to NYC dozens of times as a kid, and I really have nothing that I have to see.
