What the heck?! does this person not have children or have the luck of having a kid that is not scared?
I have a son who is pertrified of dark tunnels and has to be almost forced to ride most rides at WDW as they all start off entering a darkened tunnel. Even baby rides like Peter Pan. Let me just say we entered Spaceship Earth and the CM saw the fear in my son's eyes and said " here buddy take this ( a flashlight), just keep is pointed down" ... so to answer this woman's question, yes a flashlight is ok.. Just use common sense ( which so many I fear here dont have) and keep it from being pointed at the show/ride..

though glowsticks I might try in the future..What I also did was give my smart phone to my son.. Especially by scary stuff. I put Tom and Jerry on and it kept him focused off the ride, so the rest of us could enjoy it.

For the child needing light, my niece was nervous o the dark rides, she had her own camera and would turn it on, the light from the LCD screen was enough to calm her.

WHY on earth would you force a 'petrified' child to ride dark rides??? and scary stuff? If he can't handle it, there are a zillion other things to ride!

For starters, flash pictures on dark rides turn out like garbage.

Second, if your child is afraid enough of a dark ride that they require a flashlight to get on it, that could disrupt the experience for others, then your child isn't ready to ride the attraction.

How about the part where they tell you "NO FLASH PHOTOGRAPHY ALLOWED" when you get on the ride? Or the signs posted that say the same thing inside some attractions? Even my 9-year old knows flash photography is not allowed in addition to being rude to others.

I know this is a little off topic from this thread, but it's still regarding taking flash photography on a dark ride. You probably don't want to do that! In addition to it be annoying to other guest, you'll completely lose the effect of the ride.

If you use a flash on a dark ride, you tend to wash out the photo. When I'm taking photos, I'm usually trying to capture the experience. By washing out the photo you lose the true perspective of the ride and how it actually looked when you rode the attraction to begin with!

In the darker rides, the displays that you are meant to look are lit (although sometimes dimly lit).

If you really want to capture photos during dark rides (and keep the "feel" of the ride), up your ISO on your camera (or better yet, use a lens that F-Stop of 1.8 or lower). Put your exposure on "spot" and your camera into burst mode and your flash OFF.

In the photo below, if I had used a flash, I would've completely lost the "feel" of the shot and lit up everything (including the car I was riding, complete with other guests). Possibly washing out the photo.

Glow sticks worked great for DD when she was younger & intimidated by the dark aspects of some rides. We found that a bracelet style worked best because it kept the light low. I've also used the regular 4" sticks but they put off a lot of light if it's very dark so we would leave it in my open bag & it was more like a night light.

Speaking of, they double wonderfully as night lights when you get back to your room & no worries about leaving yours behind, plugged into the wall, when you check out.

People are responding to your post about not caring about what others think and doing whatever you want to do. Co-existing in a considerate manner is what makes the world a better place. Attitudes like you expressed won't get you far when it comes to being in a theme park with thousands of other people.

Anywho, if your granddaughter will feel more comfortable with a flashlight, go for it! She should be able to enjoy rides just like everyone else. I wouldn't worry about other people.

Is it also a problem if a child brings a small flashlight for the dark rides. We were going to try that as my granddaughter is afraid, but I don't want to do anything to spoil someone else's experience. If that is the case maybe she could just wear glow necklaces and bracelets, but I thought the flashlight would make her more secure.

Thank you for being courteous and thinking of others. Flashlights on rides, no matter how small, are very disturbing and distracting to others. I wish more people thought like you!
