DW, DS (will be 4), and I are going to DL for 6 days next August. We plan to fly in on Saturday, leaving Florida early and arriving in LA (at whichever airport) in the afternoon. We will not go to a park that day. I want to at least get over to SEE the Pacific ocean while we're there, maybe have dinner on or near the coast, before heading back to the hotel. Seems wrong to fly all that way and not go see the Pacific. Any recommendations for places we can go (taking a cab or Uber from our DL hotel)? Or would that be crazy expensive and take too much time in traffic?

We took the Gray line LA and beach tour from the DLH. Our favorite spot by far was Santa Monica. If you can just get a shuttle or cab there, I would head to the Santa Monica pier. There is an outdoor mall area within walking distance from the pier.

Santa Monica is probably too far to go with a 4 year old after a six hour flight. I was thinking more Long Beach to Huntington Beach range, closer to Anaheim. Thanks, though. :)

It didn't seem that long, but we did go a lot of places that day. Definitely don't venture to Hollywood or Venice beach with your little one. I felt very uncomfortable in Hollywood with our 5 year old (went to the Chinese Theater and the Dolby Theater) and the Gray Line tour refuses to stop at Venice Beach anymore because one of their passengers got killed there a few years ago while on a tour.

There is a Ruby's Diner (the original one?) at the end of the Huntington Beach pier that will suit your needs. You will be right on the pier over the ocean, and the diner and menu should be right up your 4yo's alley. Our little ones loved Ruby's (and still do!). Hope this helps. Have a great trip!

I've seen a number of mentions of Ruby's and it sounds fun. That might be our best bet. No way we could keep him out to watch the sunset, but it seems wrong to fly coast-to-coast and not at least "go to" the beach on the Pacific. :thumbsup2

If Ruby's is a hit with your son, there is a location in Anaheim (on Lincoln, 5-10 minutes drive from the parks), too.

Thanks. I doubt we'll leave the parks the rest of the time and won't have a car, but we'll keep it in mind.

If you are flying into LAX, you will be very close to the ocean....South Beach area (Manhattan Beach, etc) and close to Santa Monica. I'm not sure of transportation options, but it may be easier to have lunch around there when you land. Otherwise, Long Beach, Huntington, Laguna are places that aren't too far (an example of taxi fare to Long Beach airport from DLR is probably in the $50 + range + tip....one way). there are some previous threads on the Disneyland Board that talk about Beach visits from the DLR area.

If you're hotel is in the Anaheim area, you can either do uber or rent a car for an afternoon and go towards Newport or Laguna area. You'll have less traffic vs going into LA and there are nicer places to go eat and play. You can take PCH if you have your own car and see lots of things. Down in Laguna, near the Montage hotel, there are tide pools that you can see. Laguna is a quaint town to walk around, too. Newport has a fun zone area. Just be warned that the water will be colder than you think. Even on a warm August day.
