Lisa and I moved to Asheville NC from NYC 6 months ago. We both started new jobs recently and that means no vacation time for quite awhile. So, we have been having " one day vacations" for the past few months now, exploring things in and around the Asheville area. We have been to the casinos in Cherokee, to Chimney Rock, to Waynesville for a show and some shopping, and to our favorite....the Biltmore Estate.

Today we decided to go back to Biltmore, not to tour the house, but to take in some of the activities offered on the property. We rented bicycles and rode all the trails that we possibly could. We packed a picnic and ate it by the lagoon overlooking the house. We went to the Winery for a wine tasting and then had afternoon tea in the very elegant Library at the Inn at Biltmore Estate. It was a beautiful day here in the mountains and just perfect for a day at the Estate.

Anyone else take any " one day vacations" this summer and want to share??

Linda

I took off the Day after Labor day off, it was my birthday too. My husband surprised me and took the day off too.

We left Sunday and visited our dd in Marquette MI. On Monday we hiked and biked with her, then we left for Suite St. Marie in MI to see the Locks, I still don't understand that theory. 6th graders do, they had science projects all over the welcome center explaining the locks. My husband saw everyone eating ice cream cones and wondered where they were getting them. I told him to turn around and look across the street at all the shops that had fudge and ice cream, we then got ice cream cones and watched 2 more freights go through the locks.

We then went down to St. Ignace and Mackinac Island. We found out about the walk across the Mackinaw Bridge on Labor Day-I would really have liked to do it. We found a room on the island for $85 with dinner and breakfast included. We also found out that if you signed up for a room that very day, you could save 35% off your package for next year's "walk on the bridge". I booked a room then at the Grand Hotel for next Labor Day and the day after.

We had our bikes along, so we got up early and ate breakfast and circled the island 8 miles with our bikes. We also rode our bikes inland and I'm glad we did, so much more to see on the island. We stopped for lunch at the Mission House cafe and ate our lunch outside on their beautiful lawn in front of the beach.

We left by noon, because we had a 6 hour drive home. Yes gas prices were high Labor Day weekend, but I think we paid probably $100 in diesel, $100 for our hotel room and to license our bikes and ferry ride. $50 in food. My mil gave me $100 and my mom gave me $40 for my birthday, so I say our 2 1/2 day vacation was well spent. It refreshed me to go back to work.

Hey Linda! You two have done so much more than I have ever done around here. Maybe I need to get out a bit more. Let's get together soon!

well we had a lazyman one day vacation last week. We folded out the sofa bed, and watched the entire season of Lost, ate junk food, and cuddled. Gosh it was over 12 hours!

Before Katrina, we used to go to the Boats over in Biloxi, well we won't be doing that anytime soon.
