One day car rental

We will not have a car during our vacation. I want to leave WDW property for one day to drive to the Kennedy Space Center. I'm pretty sure that renting a car and driving is the least expensive option for my family of four.

I know that I can rent a car from either National or Alamo at the WDW car care center. I think I can call to request that a free shuttle will pick us up and bring us to the car care center.

Will I be able to get a shuttle as early as 7:00 am? Will I be able to get a shuttle back to my resort (CSR) as late as 9:00 or 10:00 pm?

When I priced a single day rental through the car care center, the prices were in the $72-$75 range. That seems exorbitant. Is this just the on-site convenience fee? I could rent a car for quite a bit less money off property, but then I'd have to pay taxi fare to get there. Does anyone have any ideas for reducing the cost of a single day rental?

Check the rate at the Dolphin - also Alamo/National.
Check the rate picking up at the CCC and returning to the Dolphin. Counter will be closed but you return it to the Valets.
Call tge Car Care Center location and (a) check the shuttle hours, (b) see if they have a better rate.
Look for other rental companies in tge area and see if they can pick you up/drop you off at your hotel, and what hours.
Since the hours you want seem to be outside normal non-airport operating hours, consider renting for two days.
Try a weekend rental if you can go to KSC Saturday or Sunday, sometimes there are deals on Friday noon-Monday noon rentals.
Priceline or Hotwire, again plan on a two day rental and giving up some park time.
