One bagel in the batch was moldy, would you eat the rest?

I'd go ahead and eat the rest. Mold can actually be good for you...it's the main ingredient in penicillan! I know this because my Dad used to work for a major pharmaceutical company. We'd go visit on family day and he'd show me all of the molds he was growing. When I was a kid, if someone asked me what my Dad did, I said "He grows mold!" :rotfl:

Nope, I would throw the rest out. But I'm kinda weird about stuff like that.

DH would definitely eat them.

I would probably toss them, but that kind of stuff makes me really squeemish.

I guarantee DH would eat them and not even think twice about it.

I guess our votes cancel each other out... so I don't know why I even bothered responding. :rotfl:
H will always eat old things. I tell him to go ahead, but don't feed it to the kids!
I vote for tossing 'em!

Well, since DH is deathly allergic to penicillin, I know for a fact, that he always checks bread for mold & tosses at first spec.

Me, depending on how bad it was, I would eat the bagels furthest away from the bad one....and make a decision at some point to toss the rest.

BUT it really depends on what flavor bagel & how badly I wanted it. Or if there was something else in the house to satisfy. :teeth:

I used to think bread mold = penicillin and probably okay.

Now I watch House and I'd toss 'em fast. Heck, just Google "illness bread mold" and make the call yourself.

I saw "Rarely, certain molds may produce mycotoxins that can cause illness. These mycotoxins are poisonous substances found mainly in grains and nuts. Moldy bread may contain bacteria that could cause a food-borne illness as well."

And, "Discard any moldy food. Mold sends branches and roots deep into many foods, extending contamination below the surface. You can sometimes cut mold out of foods such as hard cheese, salami, and firm fruits and vegetables. If you're in doubt or the mold growth is extensive, throw the food away."

Which were enough to convince me it's not worth the risk.

I couldn't eat em :earseek: but then I am one who refuses to drink milk ON its sell by date! :rotfl:

I'd eat one of the non-moldy bagels, and feed one to DH without telling him, then toss the rest. Even though they aren't showing the mold, it will appear by the next morning.

Now cheese - I cut off the mold, rewrap in new saran, and back in the fridge no problem. Grosses DH out, but I grew up being "thrifty" that way.

Now I've been thinking about this for a while after posting that I'd eat them.

But how much mold was REALLY on that one bagel at the end? Are we talking- "it's green and fuzzy and in a bag marked "bagels" and that's just about the only way we can figure out that it's a bagel" or are we talking like half a square inch of some greenish coloring?

For me it would depend on the extent of the moldiness.

LOL, Karen! I think the amount of mold would affect everyone's answer but I am going to assume it wasn't a large amount since Beth didn't notice it when she bought them. I would put them in a clean bag then into the refrigerator and eat them toasted. Just because there is a grape with mold, doesn't mean I toss the whole bunch. Same thing with strawberries. Or other fruits.

Now meat? That's a different story. I can't recall ever seeing meat with some mold on it, but I would toss all of that.

It's been so hot and humid here lately; I am surprised more of my bread stuffs don't end up with mold.

I would bring them back and get a fresh bag, but I'm a cheapskate. =P

I wouldn't eat them. BUT, my family makes fun of me because I sniff certain foods before I eat them (dairy products in general). I also can't stand expired stuff...I have a field day cleaning out foods from my parents' fridge. I threw out 5 expired bottles of dressing the other day. They call me the expiration queen. ;)

A little mold never hurt anyone! The reality is that I'd get grossed out and not eat it, but I'd know in my head that it's fine. So I'd throw the bad one away and let my family eat the rest. :teeth:
Oh my goodness T&B, you crack me up!!!! :lmao: That is great!!! :rotfl2:

Now it would depend on my circumstances...if it was poor college student me, you bet I would eat them, including the one with the mold (I would remove the mold I could see).

Today...hello garbage, or I would pawn them off on the people at work.

Even though I have been happily married lo these almost 14 years (Oct 17), I subscribe to what I call the 'Bachelor's rules when it comes to leftovers'. Basically - if it still look slike food, it's food. If it looks like a science experiment, throw it away.

That being said, If one was moldy, the rest are just waiting. Throw them away (unless you like your bagels with a little fuzz).
