One-Armed CBeebies Host 'Scaring' Children

There have been incidents at nursery with both of my girls involving other children and I must say the other child in both cases had, lets say clear differences in their appearance compared to my girls (one was west indian and one had an eye patch/glasses) and not once did either of my children use these things like a label to describe to me who had hit them, they mentioned the childs name and it's sex.

When my nephew was little he was telling my sister about something Daniel, a child in his class had done. There were 2 Daniels and my sister wondered which one he meant. He went such a long way round to describe which Daniel ("the one with the blue lunch box, you know the one who sits next to Ben in Maths" etc etc.) It obviously never occured to him that the most obvious physical difference was one Daniel was white and one was black.

After reading poster Barry's comment in the yahoo story link; "I know it would have played on my eldest daughter's mind and possibly caused sleep problems" did it not occur to him to explain to his daughter about the lady's disability, rather than assume she would be frightened by it

DP and I watch the bedtime hour with our DD (2yo) and neither of us had noticed her arm. The only comment from DD has been to do with the loss of Chris and Pui

I'm horrified by people's response to this! I was just telling my husband and he didn't believe me and insisted on seeing the story for himself!

What on earth are people teaching their children nowadays?

My 3YO has not actually noticed!

But we do REALLY miss Chris and Pui? Where have they gone?

Shelby hasn't even noticed that she is any different, if she does ask me though I will do as Marlin did with Nemo on his 1st day of school and say "She was born with it kids!" Seriously though I cannot believe the things that people complain about these days, I dread to think sometimes what kind of world we have bought our children into. Sad times.

I was listening to BBC London radio quite late last night and it was a topic of discussion late into the night, I feel so sorry for the poor presenter, after our "straw poll" on here, most folk hadn't even noticed and yet so much fuss is now being made of her minor disability. I hope the BBC doesn't make a stupid decision over this.

My girls have moved on to CBBC but do still look in on Cebeebies.

I have to say they didn't even notice and it wasn't until a few weeks after she started that a friend came to play and when they were watching it together the friend pointed it out.

I'm constantly explaining to the girls about the differences between people. I don't see what the big deal is?

I actually commented to my DH that I thought it was a good move by the BBC.

In all honesty Children handle things better than adults and it's grown ups who freak out about things and then "assume" how their child must be feeling!

I'm shocked by this story. My kids (6 and 2) watch CBEEBIES and neither of them have commented on the presenter. I think this has more to do with adults being uncomfortable than kids being scared. I think it's great for kids to see positive role models on tv with disabilities.

as a mum of a disabled child this sickens me, but doesnt surprise me. i agree it is usually the parents who have the problem not the kids. i would rather somebody asked me about my sons disability than to stare at him. my little boy is in mainstream primary and his classmates have grew up with him and they dont even see his wheelchair anymore! but when he goes up the town shopping with me .........different story!! and yes its adults and the elderly. this young lady is doing a great job i only hope she's left alone to get on with it. btw great to see good support for the disabled on the dis knew you were a good bunch:

Completely agree. I was in Starbucks this morning with a friend, and we overheard two women on the table next to us discussing this very issue.... one said "it is soooo inappropriate to have her as a presenter, it's not exactly child friendly". I was and felt like going over and giving her a piece of my mind.

The thing about Cbeebies is, it's hits the nail on the head. It's so well done, and in my personal opinion the BBC hasn't always got children's TV right. If anything happens to spoil the atmosphere of the presenters fill inbetween programmes I think viewers will tune out.

It's obviously the parents who have issues and they are passing it onto their kids.

Honestly, if that presenter (attractive, friendly, intelligent) can give your kids nightmares, then there is something wrong with your child!

It saddens me so much how every day there seems to be something new in the news that disappoints me about people...this story is seriously sad and pathetic.
