Day 1 - July 14 2008

Cast:
DH - Me
DW - Helen

2am couldn't get here quick enough, but as soon as we were ready, we left the house and made the 150 mile journey south to folkestone ready to catch the 0620hrs channel tunnel crossing to Calais. We always drive down to Disney as its slightly cheaper and there is no baggage allowance to have to worry about which is very important as my DW likes to make sure that there is room for anything and everything. (Her extensive collection of shoes took up most of the room, but there was still just about room for me :thumbsup2

We made it to Folkestone about 0500hrs so we amused ourselves playing pool and air hockey in the amusements for 45 mins until our letter was called and we boarded the Eurotunnel.

The crossing was quick and easy and after losing an hour due to the time difference, we started the 291km journey down to DLRP about 0750hrs. I love the French roads. Monday morning at 0800hrs and you can still move (that doesn't happen on the M25!)

It has become tradition that we have a detour through CDG airport on the way there as my DW loves driving under all the runways and seeing all the planes taking off. From one part of the road going through CDG, we were able to make out the outline of the Disney Village baloon and ToT!!! I was quite excited by this point and it was only about 30-40mins later that we were turning off of the motorway and following signs for Hotels Disney.

We decided to stay in the Cheyenne as it is in my opinion one of the best themed hotels there and its very close to the park. We stayed there 2 years ago and had a fantastic time, so we were very happy to be going back.

After check-in, we were given our room straight away (1200hrs - very impressed). We unloaded the car and went into our room. The room was really nice, however, the view was one of scaffolding and plastic sheeting. They were having some renovation work done and we couldn't see a thing out of our window. The room was an adjoining one and due to some bad experiences in the past with these types of rooms, I had requested a non-adjoing room. We also couldn't shut the window, so I went to reception and asked for a different non-adjoing room without building work outside it. They happily gave me one and me and DW moved all of our things to our new room, which was also an adjoining one.

Im not normally one to complain, I was here to enjoy myself, but I went back to reception again and told them the problems that we had had in the past with the rooms and they found me one which was non-adjoining. We put all of our things into room 1902 of Billy the Kids apartment block (our home for the next few days and made our way to the parks!

First things first, food. We ate at Annettes for lunch on our first day (another tradition). We both had the rock n roll burger and a cocktail of some description (which was very nice) whilst we worked out a plan of action.

The main focus of our trip was to meet characters and do things that we had never done before. First stop was the Magic Kingdom.

I love the feeling that you get the first time you walk through those turnstiles. The magic gets to you straight away and all your worries leave your mind. It was hot as anything (about 27oC) and the castle looked stunning with bright blue sky behind it.

We walked up Main Street and waited for the Character express at 1430hrs. The distinctive music soon started and the train came into view. We managed to meet Prince John, Jessie, Friar Tuck, Suzy and Perla. DW had her photo taken with all of them and then we made our way to Adventureland.

Indiana Jones had been closed last year when we were there, so we made sure we rode it this time. Discoverland and the Legend of the Lion King show were next on our list. I have heard alot of good things about this show, but wasn't prepared for just how good it was. It was amazing and we were really glad we got to see it.

It was about 1830hrs by this point and having been awake since 2am that morning, we were quite tired. I took DW back to the hotel and she told me to wake her up about 2030hrs so that we could go back into the park. I went and had a walk around Disney Village whilst she slept and bought her an Eeyore (her favourite character). At 2030hrs, I went to wake DW up, but couldn't bring myself to do it. She was shattered and I just let her sleep so that she would enjoy herslf more the next day.

I was almost asleep myself by this point anyway so I booked a wake up call for 0700hrs the following day (so that we would be at Cafe Mickey in time for our character breakfast), and got myself to sleep after an exhausting, but fantastic first day.

great start!!
what time eurotunnel did u get to arrive at noon??? have to decide on what time we shud go for, last time was 8.20 and we arrive just after 1, but want to be even earlier this time :lmao: to fit in as much as we can!!

also - do u mind me asking what probs u had with the adjoining doors??? i was concerned last time, and paranoid that sum1 wud come thru it so moved some stuff to block it!

cant wait for ur next day and cafe mickey breakfast!

Hi scampbunny.

We were booked onto the first train which left Folkestone at 0620hrs and then it was a really good drive down to Disneyland from Calais.

The problem that I had with the adjoining room was the fact that you can hear everything in the room next door. This includes screaming 3 year olds at 3am! We were kept awake most of the night last year by that so we wanted to make sure that we wouldnt have that problem again.

Great first day report ynwa,

I have to agree with the adjoining room scenario.
You do hear any noise from next door very very loudly in an adjoining room - simply because noise travels easier through a door than a solid wall.

We had a similar kind of thing at the Explorers.

Elaine

thanks for that! will try maybe an earlier train!

hmmm can understand bout the noise, although are biggest prob was that we were sure sum1 elses remote changed our tv (or rather kept tunring the volume up!!!!!!!!!!!!)

am wondering whether to try n request a non adjoining room or not next time.... we dont get the screaming kids at all, we choose to completely wear them out so that they are glad of sleep - it works!!!!!!!!!!!

A great start, I look forward to reading the reat:thumbsup2

wonderful start - look forward to the rest.

can we have some photos, pleeeeease?!:lmao:

I haven't had a chance to upload photo's yet, but should be able to either later on today or tomorrow :thumbsup2

Great 1st day report! Sounds great- apart from the mix up with the adjoining rooms, when i was younger and we were in america we had an adjoining room and WOW!! What a nightmare, people tried to get in our room in the middle of the night and everything.
Anways i thought that was such a lovely touch when you bought the Eeyore for your wife! Looking forward to reading the rest and seeing some pics.

Great first day. Wish we only had 150 miles to reach the tunnel.

We saw the refurb work at the Wild Bill Hickok building while wandering around Hotel Cheyenne.
