Just came across this on the DVC member website and thought that the other DVC members might be interested as well. I think they would alert members attending the Members Celebration at the beginning of the cruise, but some might skip this.

This is what was posted on the website:

Interesting to know. Thanks you.
We will be going on our first cruise in February on the Wonder. I just assumed we would get the 10% member discount on purchases. Hopefully this offer will be extended into 2017.

We are platinum and always get 10% discount on merchandise with no minimum as well as the other discounts which I never use. The 50 minimum seems silly. Discourages people from making a lot of small purchases throughout the cruise which could add up to a lot more than 50 at the end. Also I wonder what 'select' means? The platinum discount applies to everything including artwork from the art gallery.

As a DVC member I am happy to know this. Thank you for sharing. We are about to sail on our 5th cruise and it is always nice to save a little. Before it was just the platinum cruisers that got the discount.

I don't think you are reading it right. If you spend $50, you get $5 worth of discount at 10%. If you go to the shop 5 times, each time spending $10, your total savings is still only $5. The purpose of setting a limit is to get you to buy more in order to receive the discount. If you have $40 worth of stuff in your hand, you may not think about the actual math about hitting that $50 threshold. You would in theory be spending an additional $10 (on a Nice new Disney Cruiseline trading pin) to save only an additional $1 of your discount. So while you didn't need the pin, you throw it in the pile because hey, you get 10% off! So instead of spending the original $40 with no discount, you have now spent $45 after the discount applies. You are now out $5 that you may not have normally spent. Marketing at its finest!

The spa discount is nice and could provide some additional traffic to that area of the ship.

Actually the gold Castaway Club members get the merchandise discount as well. So after your next cruise, every little thing will have a discount for you!

Yes, I agree. It kind of eliminates the mandatory 18% gratuity that they add on. It actually got me interested in a massage again... I also like the photo credit. I understand it would apply to the packages that have 10 pictures or 15 pictures or so.

My point about the 50 min is that I typically am an impulse buyer and buy stuff almost every time I go to a store. Often 20 or 30 at a time. By the end of the cruise my total spent is generally 150 or more. If I waited until I had 50 each time For a discount I might put off the purchase entirely and then forget about I wanted to begin with. That's just me. I realize the discount is the same regardless but that doesn't fit the way I shop. So to me the 50 min seems irrelevant. But I'm sure Disney has figured out the best way to make the most money.
