On the UK forum-mandatory tipping in the US??

Probably the other part of the reason why we don't have that type of tipping system in the UK is that many people are very of the same opinion as you and think that it shouldn't be expected.

Gotta love the whole dialogue about it in 'Reservoire Dogs' though!
(Typical Tarantino!)

Gosh - where to begin?

First of all, I have not seen service added into the check unless there is a larger party. I can however see that in places where they would have a large overseas tourist trade that they would do this. Europeans are not accustomed to tipping, so I can see this done so that the wait staff earn their wage. Let's face it, the US Government is going to get pretty skeptical about a wait person not reporting tips within the expected range, besides making less money than they should have.

Cereal and ice - I lived in the UK for 4 years from 1987 through 1991, I have never seen a cereal or ice shortage. Cereal flows freely in Great Britain. It is not particularly expensive or hard to get.

Ice - well, I've come to think that Americans over ice everything. I hate getting a drink that is more ice than beverage. How much ice does it take to make a drink cold anyway. Besides, loading up glasses and cups with ice is just another way to limit the amount of beverage. I like ice in my drinks, but always insist on a limit.

The key to travel abroad is realizing that you are indeed abroad, and the customs are different, not better, not worse but different. (World Showcase at Epcot does not substitute for travel abroad).

I know that when I travel around the country on business, things are pretty different from place to place and certainly not like sweet home Chicago.

I know I always get looked at like I've got 3 heads because all I want is eggs for breakfast ... "You mean you don't want any meat with that!?"

:confused3 Sorry VSL haven't got the foggiest idea what that is as I haven't seen the film all the way through - too much unnecessary violence for my taste!

They're in some kind of diner towards the beginning and when they pay one guy refuses to tip and it leads into a huge debate over whether you should HAVE to tip waitresses (I agree with you about the violence in his films though).
I found it quite interesting :flower:
