I think that you would be happiest at the Disneyland hotel. It has LOVELY monorail slide pools, if you have kids, and has been recently renovated so the rooms are fresh and clean with a modern, sophisticated disney touch. But then again, you are not paying for the room, you are paying for the amenities. Plus the disneyland hotel is unlike anything in WDW. So basically it has the feel of a luxury hotel... done by disney! Not themed, but decorated... by disney!
We are planning our first trip to Disneyland in the spring of 2016. Would you recommend a staying in one of the three Disney hotels, or should we go with a good neighbor hotel?
We recently did our first trip and at first we were going to stay off site just across the street at HOJO. A month before we went we switched to the DLH and we ended up really liking that we did switch. Of course we don't know how it would have been off site BUT we ended up taking a break everyday and if we were in DL we would just take the monorail and be pretty close to our hotel.
We also really enjoyed the extra hour everyday at each park that you get for staying onsite. The first day we got Star Tours and Space Mountain out of the wait with only 10 minute waits (by 815 they were both at 45 minute waits). The second day we got Radiator Racers out of the way and grabbed our fast pass right after 8am. The third day we got Ana and Elsa FP and a few rides in Fantasyland done.
We didn't think that extra hour every day (some days only 30 minutes really) would help but it really did.
If we ever go back again we are definitely staying onsite again. If you book early enough in advance you can get them for a decent price. We booked our hotel on Orbitz at the last second which got us a $300 discount and Orbitz bucks that I used for our last night on our trip at a hotel near the airport.
