Hi everyone,

We have hit a slight hiccup in our Disneyland Holiday.

My DD (11) just got braces. We were told (after they were on) that she would need to be on a liquid diet for at least 2 weeks. We leave for the US and Disneyland in 1 week!!!!!

My DD is not a big soup eater. I have managed over the last day to get her to eat some creamy pumpkin soup but that is it (Mac and Cheese blended, sure...Weatbix blended, yep...). Does anyone know of anything at the parks that doesn't need to be chewed and isn't just junk food (ice cream is great, but she can't live on it).

Is it possible that the sit-downs would be able to blend her food?

Help please help.

Just our luck, our trip to DL is a surprise for my DD's graduation from year 6!

I guess it is kinda humorous.

Thank you,
Aussie Caribou

I would double check with your Orthodontist....that just doesn't sound right..
I have never heard of such a thing...usually just keep food fairly soft for the first few days to a week...
Then nothing real hard, crunchy or sticky...make sure to cut food up and not try to bite things off with the front teeth.
also make sure you have plenty of ortho wax with you. The cheeks and tongue can get pretty well abraded by the brackets and wires.
You place the ortho wax over the offending area until the tissue starts to get a bit of a callous or thickening so it can handle the sharpness of the brackets and wires.
If a blister or sore develops, lots of rinsing with warm salt water is the best for healing the tissue...no Ambesol or such.

I agree with DanT about double checking with the orthodonist, i had braces and was only told to avoid things like sticky caramel apples or anything else really chewy/sticky (gum, skittles, etc) but i didn't even really follow that rule :rotfl:
Never heard of anyone having to be on an all liquid diet for 2 weeks :scared1: because of braces. A day or two would be reasonable but 2 weeks sounds a bit extreme.

I started wondering if technology moved backwards. It been a long time since I had braces but I never required all liquid.

I would get a second opinion, or come to the US and have them removed and a new set put on. Then she could eat soft foods the next day.

I have some doubt Disney can accomodate a liquid diet, but it is possible.

If you call disney you can ask a chef before arriving for dietary needs. They usually will return your message. I haven't done this personally but I'm sure someone with allergies in thier family can add some details on contacting a disney chef.

There are all of the Boost, Ensure, Pedia Sure drinks and you'd be able to bring those into the park in a soft sided cooler for special dietary needs.

I see your DD doesn't like soup, but the potato soup at Carnation really is quite good and hearty too. Disney sells frozen fruit bars, and yogurts.

You can review the Disney menus online at www.allears.net under the Disney dining section.

I think California Adventure has a smoothie place.

You can also have groceries delivered to your hotel. I believe they have a $100 or so minimum.
and www.ralphs.com
www.vons.com
I'm not sure if www.safeway.com still is in the area or not, but they deliver in some areas.

That is the weirdest thing I"ve heard...I'd get another opinion...

I am curious to hear why it would require a liquid diet too. My DD's ortho actually gave her the opposite advice. She was told not to baby her teeth when they are sore because it takes longer to adjust. She should continue eating as normal to "work out" the pain (similar to how a baby gets relief using a teething ring). Of course, that is still following the regular rules of braces (no biting into apples, now chewy candy, etc).

As for a liqued diet at DL...sorry, I'm not sure what else to recommend. They do have the Gumbo in NOS and I believe a potato cheese soup at the Carnation Cafe.

I agree with ALLLL the others that said to get another opinion. I had braces from 5th grade to 10th grade and never once had to be on a liquid diet. Immediately after getting them on, or after getting them tightened, they would be sore for a day and I might eat soft things like noodles or soup, but I was usually fine by the next day.

Yep I agree too! Both from my experience and from DDs right now. We never give DD a liquid diet. We do offer softer choices for a day or two after each adjustment if she wants them. Really, she takes a few doses of Motrin over a couple of days and it is no big deal.

Did the ortho explain to you the reason for the liquid diet?

I am curious if maybe there is more going on with her teeth than just the standard braces, and that is why none of us have heard of that.

My DS1 just got them off; DS2 will soon be getting them on. Like others have said, he was sore (quite sore) for about a week initially, and then depending upon the adjustment, for 1-2 days after each time. He'd do soft foods - pasta, smoothies, grilled cheese (without crusts), soup - but not a liquid diet.

When i got my braces within 2 hrs i was eating subway and was fine - lots of cleaning to do afterwards but wasnt not told a liquid diet maybe for the 1st couple of days but not 2 weeks

Hi there, i have 3 teenagers, all 3 have had braces and 1 still in them...we were never told to have a liquid diet, that really seems odd...my son even ended up with a allergic reaction to the metal and his mouth and lips swelled and he wasnt even put on one...I would definately check back with him. My kids couldnt eat a few foods, but pretty much ate whatever they wanted...

I agree that it seems a bit strange you were told she needs to be on a liquid diet and would also double check about that.

But as far as answering your question...... my DS is 5 and just learned to eat about a year ago (feeding tube before that) so he only knows how to eat pureed food right now. I have to tell you that I wish i could just buy him food at the park (even though it's expensive) but instead I've always had to bring food with us. The only things i've found at the parks that he would be able to eat are ice cream, yogurt and guacamole.

Oh, there is Jamba Juice in DTD. I'm not sure how healthy that stuff really is but they can at least add vitamins to it to make it a little more healthy. Also, Storytellers will blend food for you, as will Wine Country Trattoria (not sure about anywhere else) but like you indicated, not sure that would go over too well. How about mashed potatoes and gravy?

Both DS and DD are in the midst of orthodontic treatment right now. DS was on soft foods for a couple of days, but that was because of tooth extractions, not the braces. Other than the standard no-no's DD was told she could eat anything she felt up to from day one.

If your DD does decide to be a rebel and eat solid food... I know a good orthodontist not too far from Disneyland should she have any problems with her braces. ;)

But unless she has something really out of the ordinary going on with her treatment, I highly doubt that eating solid food would cause any problems at all. Is your orthodontist the overly cautious type? :confused3

Just check with her orthodontist the reason why. If you explain that you are going overseas I'm sure he will be more helpful. My 16 year old DD has had her braces for over 2 years and she has never needed liquids. Just make sure you pack her wax and plenty of panadol. If you get stuck you can buy wax at Walgreens.

I agree that that is the strangest thing I have heard. I had braces on a couple years ago (got them off a year ago September) and definitely did not have any issues eating. Couldn't eat hard or crunchy things at first, and then there are definite no nos like carmel and nuts because you don't want to break a wire or cause a bracket to come off. But a normal diet should be fine. And in a week she probably won't be sore at all.

So if you really do wind up at Jamba Juice.

They do not add sugar to their fruits. However they do add sherbert to some of the drinks.

I order Protien Berry Workout. Because it is Soy Milk, protien powder, and berries. You can sub out anything you dont like for something you do...

I had braces for seven years. Four retainers, a pallet expander, two temporary retainers and just had my fifth mouth surgery. I have never heard of an all liquid diet except when I had my wisdom teeth pulled. Soft foods for the first few days.....mac and cheese, mashed potatoes ect. Other than that i dont see any reason why ONLY liquids would be necessary.

Thanks everyone. Looks like the poor kid will be able to eat something.

And yes, a liquid diet (on advice from 2 orthos and a dent, I believe in second options). She has an abnormal bite and currently her top teeth sit on the lower brackets of the braces. If she chops down, she is likely to break them off and have to go to the ortho over in the States to have them reapplied. It's because she's going to the States over the first two weeks that she is on the liquid diet. But on a bright note and with a bit of pixie dust, we have already seen marked change in her teeth. Ortho had a look at her teeth yesterday and there is a hope that she will be cleared for soft foods soon. Will it be soon enough? Well, we leave for Disneyland in 40 hours! Let's hope that the Tiki Gods are on our side.
