On-line check-in question

I've heard that on-line check-in prior to arrival makes checking in quicker and easier. Should I also check-in on line for my second reservation of a split stay?
Would that possibly help us get our room earlier so we aren't "roomless" until 3?

I can't determine if online check in helps you get your request. We have 24 online check ins and we get out request about 50% of the time, the same percentage as our regular check ins.

Might be our luck or might be the system.
