I have paid most of our monthly bills on line for the past 9 months. I have never had a problem. Today I received an overdue notice from GMAC. They did not receive our car payment due on 7/5. The amount was drawn out of my account on 7/2. I called GMAC, verified the information and the account number. They told me to call the bank. I told them that I would but I was looking at my statement on line and the money was debited. They will now research through another department. I called the bank. GMAC is one of the companies that requires a check. When I pay on line, my bank must cut a check and mail it, which they do the same day. They will research it and see if the check they sent has been cashed. If it has, I would assume that they will fax proof of that, since I had to call GMAC back and get a fax number and then provide it to the bank. If the check is lost, the bank will stop payment at their expense and redeposit my money. GMAC said that they would remove the late payment fee and to pay it through the on line banking again. Has anyone ever had this kind of problem??? If so, was it easy to resolve? I HATE paying anything late! I am thinking that I should send next month's now although I hate to do anything else while they are researching this.

I have a long time ago and I won't use online banking with that type of system again. I just wasn't comfortable that the money out of my account didn't mean it was in the hands of the company I was paying.

I do pay almost everything online but do it with each company I do business with. I still have control and know the payments are credited to my account when I make them.

I do with the companies that have that option. Would you believe that GMAC is "in the process" of setting that up? What is taking them so long. On the bright side, I could have written them a check, have it lost in the mail and then I would have to pay for the check cancellation fee. Now the bank pays. I mailed a check to Amex and it took 8 weeks to get there. I didn't stop payment. I just left enough in the account to cover and wrote another check. Since it was a credit card, it left me with a surplus and I didn't have to pay that month. Now I pay all my credit cards on line with that particular company, as well as my insurance company.

Yes, had the exact same problem - but it was fixed with no issues. The bank had mailed the check to the correct address, but guess it was lost in the mail. The bank placed a stop payment, sent the company another check - problem solved. I've been using online banking for at least 3-4 years now, and it's happened twice. Ironically, both times with the same company. Personally, I think it was getting lost in that company's mail room.

EXACTLY!!! That's why it doesn't bother me in the least, as long as my bank is willing to handle the problem - which they have been. I pay every single one of our bills online - for this reason.

So, at this point, the plan is, if GMAC didn't receive the check, the bank redeposits into my account, I go on line again, pay again and then they cut a check. I guess that is the same thing you did but with an extra step. How long did it take to resolve? I called both today. Can I expect an answer on Monday? thanks

Mine was just taken care of instantly. I'm assuming money is taken out of my account and put into some type of "clearing account" with the bank. So, they could instantly see that the check had not cleared that account. They just placed a stop on that one and sent them another check. I made one phone call, and it was just handled from there.

I really don't know why they're making you process the payment again - kinda seems silly. I would certainly expect an answer on Monday. Now, if it turns out the check has been cashed, that's another can of worms. They're going to have to get GMAC to sign some type of forgery affidavit I would think so that they could recoup the money and get it to the correct party.

I do online banking too and a few bills are paid the same way, haven't had that issue come up yet. But, it sounds like it will be resolved quickly. I hate stuff like that. It's all good until there is a wrinkle, then it's a PITA. LOL

I think that is why they wanted the fax number. If the check has been cashed, they can send them a copy of the cancelled check. Personally, I don't see why they couldn't have gone into whatever account my money went to, to see if the check has been cashed. I asked her how long it takes and she says, "pretty quick"! Now thats an answer for ya! ;)

I've been using on line banking (Commerce) for a couple of years. I was nervous at first but they have not messed up once. But I have. Like sending a $400 payment to the gas company instead of a CC. Which of course I caught AFTER the due date and encountered a late charge!

Long before on line banking I once sent payments out to the phone co. and the electric co. I accidentally put the elec co. check in the phone co. envelope and visa versa. Would you believe the electric co. cashed the check made out to the phone co? And since the amount wasn't right, I think I was charged a late fee! The phone co. sent the check back.

A Happy Ending. Apparently our bank faxed a copy of their cancelled check to GMAC, who was researching the "problem" and found that when they entered the account number, they were "off" by one number. From Friday evening to Monday am, PROBLEM RESOLVED. It could have or would have happened whether I sent the check or the bank sent the check. Since THEY sent the check, they were quite motivated in helping me resolve the problem. All fixed. I will continue on line banking. This is further confirmation that it is " a good thing".

Dawn, glad to hear it! We have our car loan with GMAC and we were paying by phone (call them directly) until I found out that they charge 10.00. I freaked! My husband never told me. Talk about throwing money away.
Anyhow, glad it worked out.:goodvibes

When I was trying to resolve this problem, I offered to pay next month's payment early so I would be current. I asked if there was a fee for the phone payment and yes, it is $10. I told them I would not be willing to pay by phone and they would have to wait unless they waive the fee. They don't have a mechanism to waive the fee! Can yo imagine?? Pay on line. If there is a problem, it will be resolved with help so much quicker. I have a ZERO PERCENT loan. I want it to stay completely zero percent.

HIYA Dawn:

I have (or had) "GMAC Direct Pay" with our Chevy Truck. I filled out all the forms for "electronic funds transfer". (We bought the truck in 2005 and paid it off in 2007). They deducted our monthly payments right from my checking account. No checks were cut (that I am aware of at all.) :confused3 I checked it online monthly and never had a problem with any of the payments.

OT w/GMAC..when we paid the truck off they sent me a xerox copy of the title...:confused3

I called them up and asked what that was about and they then said we will send you an original title... :confused3 Now that to me was odd. No real explanation for the "copy"!

That's how mine is. They just withdraw my payments from my checking account- no problems yet!

I don't want them reaching into my bank account automatically. The only bills that I pay automatically are my cable bill and cell phone bills, and they go to American Express so I can get the miles and if there is an error; dispute it. I would not be happy with a "copy" of the title. Most Motor Vehicle Dept. require the real thing. Call your DMV and see what they say.

Dawn: I just keep going back to the GMAC DIRECT PAY!!! You have been through quite abit with this mailing option because you do not want your bank accounts compromised!! Well I have been banking online exclusively since 2002 with ALL my bills and have yet to be compromised in any way shape or form!!! No constant hassles the likes that you have had to deal with at all. Heck, at this point give it a shot and see how easy life can really be when you pay online!!! :goodvibes:

Yes, Dawn, after my one call re: the copy, the orginial was immediately sent to me!!! :goodvibes:

Yeah, I agree, that's too much of a headache. I don't think GMAC is really set up for mail in payments- they VERY heavily suggest you pay online or do the automatic payment withdrawals. With all the problems you have been having with them..yikes, I don't have the patience for that!!! I do an automatic payment withdrawal on 26th of the month, have been doing this for 2 years with no problems. If you are worried about them overdrafting your account, use a separate checking account you only keep enough for your car payment in. A lot of people do that! I am a risk taker myself. :rotfl:

Well ajk912, great minds think alike!!! :goodvibes:

I am paying on line; through my bank. Most of my bills are paid on line. I just don't want to set it up through GMAC to be able to grab money out of my account, they haven't impressed me with their banking abilities. :lmao:

Yes, I understand completely BUT at this point with all these issues you are having month after month I would give the "DIRECT PAY" a chance. I think you will find it so much easier and no hassles!!! I would get an email prompt from GMAC (every month) 2 weeks before the payment date. Then on the date I would check my statement and absolutely NO ISSUES!!! EASY & EASY!!! :goodvibes:

I got around the "grab from my account" issue by setting up a free checking account that is ONLY used for direct payments like our GMAC.

On the 10th of the month, my regular account is scheduled to transfer our car payment into the free checking account. on the 15th of the month GMAC takes their money. This way, the only account they have access to is the one that does not maintain a balance of any significance.

(we are lucky our bank has no minumum free checking options)
