I just wanted to say that I've had all Vero owners and Vero CM's in my thoughts and prayers.

An interesting thing I just heard on Fox News was that the National Guard will be combing Vero Beach for land mines. They said that that beach was formerly used for land mine traning? or something like that and when there is large amounts of beach errosion, that some of these land mines become exposed. That's all they said, just a little snippit. It sounds as if there might be quite a bit of beach errosion at Vero.:(

Land mines????? Seriously? I'd hate to think we might be strolling down the Vero beach some day in the future and have an up close and personal experience w/a land mine. :scared1:

Apparently they've been there for years, but well covered up. It's just that when there's lots of errosion that they can get exposed. The National Guard will be combing Vero Beach to make sure there aren't any exposed, I'm sure. Maybe someone with knowledge of the history of Vero Beach would have more information on exactly what kind of training used to go on there.

That's really an interesting story. Let's hope it doesn't delay any reopenings.

It's good to see you! Yes, she's a cutie isn't she! I keep her M-F during the day while DD works. She's crawliing and pulling up now and gives her Nana quite a work out, but it's fun and I love it. I'm aready brainwashing...err, I mean, introducing her to Disney via, books, movies and the Disney channel.::yes::

The love of disney is her blood if she has yours. I hope, if and when we have a grandchild, SHE is as cute as yours.

Wow, that's really going to give new meaning to the term beachcombing.

How "likely" is it that DVD would foster a DVC resort on a "land mine" field? It seem pretty inproable to me!

I'm not saying, and Fox News didn't say, that the Disney Vero Beach has land mines, they just said that there used to be some sort of military training or something on that beach and that land mines were buried there. When the beach has a lot of errosion, they can appear. Just passing along what I heard. I've never been to Vero Beach. Is it a large beach that goes further than what DVC sits on? I'm doing some searches on google and other and haven't found any more info about it yet. I'll post if I do. I don't think it's anything to freak out over or anything and if they're there, I'm sure the NG will find them and dispose of them.

I saw the same story on Fox New that you did Jennymouse. Me and DH are planning to go to Vero for the first time at the end of our trip next month. When we heard the newscaster say that, we both looked at each other wide-eyed and I said "that should be interesting. And I understood it the same way you did - military used to do some sort of drills somewhere near there and they said these mines could be ACTIVE. Scary, huh?? Lets hope there are none, but if so, let's hope they find them all!! I'm sure they're equipped to find them though.

Here's some info on what Fox is probably talking about. I don't think there's a great chance of anything happening.

WWII Leftovers

Interesting that they were training using live mines?!!!

I'm sure if they are out there the NG will find them.

Sounds like they were also testing the degree to which they worked. Improper use could leave soldiers stranded on a beach, unable to move forward.

I'm mean spirited today. Have the arrested looters walk the beach in 3 foot wide shoes!! They can keep any land mines they find.

Great detective work, PamOKW. I didn't find that and was beginning to think perhaps I'd heard wrong and was sorry I posted without more information.

I'm glad that the NG are on top of things there. In searching for that preverbial "silver lining" of the dark cloud that is Hurricane Frances, perhaps the NG finding and destroying any landmines on Vero Beach is it.
