when we were on the disney magic in July 2019, we booked 3 placeholders (one for DH and me, one for my daughter and her family, one for my son and his family).

We're using one of the placeholders for an upcoming cruise (october 2020) that DH and i are going on...

which leaves 2 placeholders that aren't going to be used in time..
as soon as the summer 2021 itineraries come out, we'll book something for all 9 of us in August 2021 - but that will be past the 2 year limit for the placeholders.

My question is this:
When my husband and i are on the disney Wonder in october this year (2020), can i use the on board discount for 2 of the rooms that we'll already have booked for 2021?

i hope someone understands what i'm trying to ask...

You can re-shop the cruises. It's not possible to simply apply a 10% discount to an already booked cruise, but they can essentially cancel the prior reservation and rebook it with the onboard booking discount. The trick is if the prices have increased more than 10% between when you first book and when you are onboard to rebook with the discount, then it won't make sense to re-shop the cruises.

thanks!!! exactly what i was asking.
so i'll have to sit down with the future cruises person to see if it makes sense to cancel/rebook or not.

We have done this. But, we booked the original reservation thru Costco, so it couldn’t be cancelled onboard. We just booked a new reservation and picked the cabins we wanted using the 10% discount and cancelled the original booking with Costco when we got home.

In our case, it was still cheaper using the 10% off than it was booking the original cabins months earlier.

that's good to know. We book with Dreams Unlimited, so i don't know if i'll have to do the same or not. But good to know this is an option!

Has there been any updates if placeholders are going to be extended during shutdown. I want to move my fall cruise but the placeholder will expire before the change date.

People who have had their cruises cancelled or otherwise gotten a covid-related promotion (e.g., the 100% FCC for certain summer sailings) have been allowed to keep their placeholder. Since DCL has not (and likely won't IMO) made changes to any fall cruises, there would not be an extension of placeholder deadlines for a fall cruise at the this time.

It would apply to any cruise that has been assigned to a TA, instead of directly thru DCL. We did this once with DCL, when we reshopped the second leg of a B2B cruise. Once we disembarked, I contacted our DU agent, who cancelled the original cruise, and was able to move the new cruise to the original stateroom so that we didn't have to change staterooms between cruises.
