After 2 years of trying to get my dad's permission, I'm finally getting my tattoo.

It's going to be a small gold ribbon for childhood cancer. After battling the disease myself, and seeing many friends do it too, I want something to commemorate our battles, to remind me that I'm strong, and to never give up.

I know some of you don't agree with tattoos, especially since I'm barely 16, but I thought this would be a special tattoo. I'm not getting this tattoo just because it looks cool, I'm getting it because it means something to me.

Paula and anyone else, any advice?

That's awesome!
Where are you going to get it?

And advice... don't move and I wouldn't look at what they're doing if I were you, that would scare me so much.
You'll also need to ask them about how to take care of it so you don't get any infections or anything.

My advice: HAVE FUN! I can't wait until July. I want my tattoo now! (I've finally settled on a first one).

Also, DO NOT squirm while it's being done. If you're sensitive to pain/needles (which, knowing how strong you are, shouldn't be a problem), make sure you get it someplace where there isn't a lot of bone/tendons near the surface. There should be a type of goopy lotion-y stuff they'll give you, if not, ask for some- it'll cut down on irritation and such. Keep it wrapped and dry for however long they reccommend, this varies with every tattoo.

Other than that, I don't know what else I can tell you. My brother-in-law runs a shop, so I know a bit about it. He's the one who'll be doing mine when I get it (JUST OVER 3 MONTHS!!!).

ooooo thats awesome my parents have flat out told me that they won't give me permission but once i'm 18 they have no control and i can do what i want...so i'm counting down the days till then.

I'd say this is good

cuz it's for a cause

just be carefull about how it looks when your in your 20's

when I say that, I mean the image changes as your skin does, and your not really done growing at 16

Yay! That's great, Sonya!

Oh yeah, where are you getting it? Your wrist would look pretty, IMO.

I know I definitely want to get it done near my foot. Ideally would be the inside of my left heel, but we'll see. I want it to be "hidden" because I need to think about careers and hiring when I'm older.

Well, kinda, technically I am. Well, at least my legs are.

Aw, that's great Sonya!
I have no advice since I have no tattoo, but I hope to be getting one when my mom is off of community control.

YAY!! I'm so excited for you!!
Don't worry too much about it. It hurts less than most people think. Its really more annoying than it is painful. Areas close to bones hurt more (ribs, ankle, top of feet) will be a bit more sensitive. One of the things that helped me while getting my tattoo was to look away while the artist was drawing it. I would look down to see the progress while he was getting more ink, but as soon as the needle went down, I looked away.

If you have an exact picture in mind, bring it in with you.

As far as after care, keep on the bandage they put on it for AT LEAST 2 hours. Its basically an open wound, so you don't want to infect it. And for the next two weeks you should keep it clean and wash it a few times a day. The tattoo artist should explain all of this, though.

when are you getting it done?? You need to post a pic of it as soo an you get it!! yayayayayayyay I'm so happy for you!! This is so cool!!

oh, and make sure you feel comfortable at the tattoo parlor. Research good parlors, and make sure you watch to see the artist is using a new needle and whatnot. safety first! :upsidedow

That's really cool Sonya!

Although IMO you are kind of young for a tattoo, I think it's awesome that its not just to be "cool", your supporting something (:

Good luck!

Thanks everyone!

Ideally, the tattoo would be on the inside of my left heel, almost like this:

(that actually is my foot but with a temporary tattoo)
or this:

This is the design I want, but instead of being pink it'll be gold. The pink ribbon is for breast cancer, gold is for childhood cancer.

The length would be 1/4 of an inch, give or take a few millimeters.

I don't know when exactly it'll be done. I don't really know of any tattoo parlors here (well I do, but I haven't heard anyone recommend them) so I'm going to ask my friends mom who just had one done. She's actually gotten the same thing I want because her daughter is the one with brain cancer. Anyway, it'll be done for my 16th birthday as my gift. My b-day's still not for another 4 1/2-5 weeks so we have time.

My dad is freaking out about it. He is absolutely against tattoos cause he got a stupid one in the army. I'm only getting it on terms that he'll be there when it's done and that he approves of it. I've got him this far so it'll only take a bit more. My dad is super paranoid so if he doesn't see a clean needle opened I think he'll have a coronary. I'm paranoid enough that I'll demand to see the new needle.

ooooh i'm excited for you!!
i've been dying to get a tattoo for ages, but i just can't decide on what i want.
my cousins getting one on the 18th of april so i'll have to ask him how it was and report back to you.

that's a cute place for it too!

my advice, while you're getting it just think about how much the tattoo means to you and how much of a struggle your battle with cancer was....the tattoo will feel like nothing compared to that!! :goodvibes

it's a great idea for a tattoo, you must be so excited!!

Caitlin you are so kind -tytyty!

I am very excited. I'm not into piercings and all that, and piercings to me don't really mean anything. Well, except that I look good in earrings. ;) But I want the tattoo to just be a reminder - if I ever get down I can look to my tattoo and it'll remind me that I can and will beat whatever comes my way.

Where's Courtney when I need her? She has one on her heel too, although it's the outside. If anyone can get in touch with her and direct her here, I'd appreciate it muchos!

Okie dokie. I found a parlor. I've actually seen reviews about this place on different websites, and my friend's mom had two of her tattoos - both are beautiful.
I'll probably be heading off to do it soon, within the next week or so. I'm just sooooo nervous.
