Help!!!!

We are only 36 days away from our trip to the US and DH's job has been made redundant!

He has 2 weeks to try and get a job elsewhere within the company or he will get a redundancy package. :confused3

I am in a spin and don't quite know what to do!!!

We have a mortgage, orthodontic braces booked for our 13yo DD in December and our 21 day trip booked in November! :earseek:

I work 2 days a week, but that is chicken feed and would bearly cover groceries.

DH said not to worry too much ...yet.
He feels we can still do the trip, but how can we spend knowing there is no job to come back to?

We have spent so much time reserching this trip and saved so hard!!!

I will keep everyone posted on any developments.

Wow.. that's definitely a bummer.

You have a 21 day trip booked? Is there any way to cut it down to a week or two weeks at the most? Three weeks is a lot of school for your daughter to miss anyway.

I hope you can work something out.

Thanks Guys,

Yes we can think about cutting it back, but we are coming from Australia.
If we cut back too much we wont even be over jet lag and we will be on our way home!!

For 9 days we are staying with friends in the Bay area, so we don't have hotels booked for the whole time.

This was always a budget trip. I have booked everything online or via phone and we have not used a travel agent. I have spent hours searching for the best deal and price.

I am fairly confident, that other than a couple of small splurges on hotels, we couldn't be doing it much cheaper.

Fingers crossed that a job comes up or the redundancy package is good enough to allow us some breathing space.

I just can't stand all this not knowing!! :guilty:
We can't cancel and we can't continue booking until we know which way the job situation is going.

Thanks again for your thoughts and kind words, :wave2:

I really feel for you - I lost my job just before Christmas 2003 and we did very seriously think about just booking a holiday to Disneyland then and there using my redundancy package, but me, being a very cautious type, decided not to. I got another job about 3 months later (just as the redundancy money ran out!) and we went to Disneyland last December.

Given you are coming from Australia, the big expense is the air fares (I think it was about half the cost of our trip) so cutting back on the time doesn't make much sense (especially as you have free accommodation for half the trip).

I'm sorry I can't offer sensible advice - if your husband does have to get a new job he won't be able to go on holidays straightaway, so you either have to take the plunge and take the trip and hope to get a job when your return, or wait another year. Good luck!

Hi LucyKate,

Thanks for the morale support.

Our airfares are what is enabling us to be able to afford this trip, actually.

2 seats are booked with FF points and the other 3 are discount standby deats with UA through our friends in SF who work for UA.( at about 1/3 of the cost!)

When I said this was a budget trip, I really meant it!!

I think it will be OK.

If DH gets another job within the company they should honor his leave application and if he gets the redundancy package it should be enough to give us some breathing space and allow for the trip to go ahead.

He finishes up on the 22nd and we are due to fly out on the 11th. I would doubt that he could find a new job in that time.

Oh Gosh! Sometimes being the grown ups is no fun!

As a once famous Aussie political figure said........

"Life wasn't meant to be easy".

Hi,

As another Aussie who visted in May, I thought I would write. I don;t know where you are staying etc, but I stayed at super 8 on west katella and was very happy with it, infact nicer than hotel in LA (hyatt), That and the 14 day disney pas allowed me to stay 10 days there with 2 of those nights free. I could walk to the parks etc and used that time to get over jetlag after being in LA and Vegas. Feel free to email me or pm me if you like.

For us it was 1 month from our big 10th anniversary trip when DH was laid off. We canned the trip and I've been sorry ever since. It took DH a year to find another job, but we are all the better for it. In the end, it's clear that EVERYTHING HAPPENS FOR A REASON! :umbrella:

I say GO. Everybody is going to need the stress relief a good vacation will bring.

As for us, we're planning Paris for year 15--2008.

Sending good thoughts and pixie dust your way! :wizard:

Thanks Dale-n-chip,

Nice to know we are not the only ones!

We have decided to carry on with the trip, it seems to be the only thing to do.
We have saved for it and are not borrowing to go...so it is still on!

Sorry it took your DH 1 year to find a job. Thant does worry me a lot, but I guess we will cross that bridge when we get to it.

Thanks
