OMG..the power just went off!

I was sitting here,DISing and blink! Off goes the power. So I go outside and all the lights on my street are off.
I was going to call DH to see what I should do in case it doesn't come back on and realize, we no longer have a regular phone. All we have are cordless,so I can't call anybody! I go to a neighbor's to use their phone,but they aren't home.
So I was sitting in the dark,wondering what I should do because by this time I am TOTALLY freaked out when the lights snap back on.

We have a Non cordless phone just incase of power outages - you can get one really cheap at Walmart.

DH had one through his company's mgr plan. During the time he had it, the plan changed and he changed position where he was not really supposed to HAVE the mgr's plan anymore,but they were going to let him keep it.

Then his phone broke and he was just going to buy a new phone,since getting a new phone would be cheaper than repairing his old one. But the cell phone rep for his store (who was the person DH dealt with when he had phone issues)told him if he bought a new phone, he wouldn't be eligible for the plan anymore.

So DH got rid of his cell phone and ended his contract.

Like you, one time the power went out and all I had was a cordless and it wouldn't work, I had a cell but the battery was dead, so now, I have a regular back up phone in case something happens.

The only regular phone we have is one that hasn't worked in several years that we let DS play with.

I know we really NEED a cellphone in case of emergency,but right now DH is so ticked off with the cell companies, he doesn't want one at all.

So..we're using the money (part of it anyway) we used to spend on a cell bill every month for our TiVo account.

Everyone should keep a regular plug in phone in case the power goes off. Flashlights, batteries, oil lamps and extra oil are must haves too. You never know!

I guess so. We have one big flashlight,but I think DH put in his car. I don't know. And we're rather disinclined to keep oil lamps around because of DS and the cat.

But I guess we need to go buy something,don't we?

There are some pay as you go plans that are wonderful for emergencies. My personal favorite is the Virgin plan. Buy the phone, some of which are only $20.00 themselves, and pay $20.00 every three months, unless you use that all up in the three months.

Rates aren't great...25 cents a minute for the first ten minutes of use each day (then it drops to 10 cents a minute). Text messages are free to receive and ten cents to send.

That's it though. If you seldom use the thing, it's hard to beat.

I would suggest getting a prepaid cell phone too. You don't want to be in the house with no power and a baby! What if something happened? At the very least go buy a cheapy corded phone at Wally World. I would not want to be in a home with children and no means of communication.
