I work overnights at a hospital. I am currently at work. My hospital only sells Pepsi, so if I was not able to stop and pick up Diet Coke on my way into work, I usually order Dominos so I can get a couple of 20 oz bottles for the night. (I cannot leave the premises, I am the only respiratory therapist, if a code happens, I have to be there).

Tonight, I decided I would order two large Brooklyn pizzas to share with the nurses I work with. They are cut into 6 slices. Just about enough for everyone to have 1 slice. The monitor tech was the 1st person I saw, so I invited her to take a slice before I walked the pizza back to the nurses. She was excited, and started to take two slices. As she is pulling the 2 slices out of the box, she asked if she could have two slices. I told her just one, because I needed to make sure everyone got at least one slice before it was all gone. She is still pulling the two slices towards her as she says " I can't have two slices?" NO....now, that slice is set aside because she had her hands on it, so she will more than likely end up with 2 slices, if no one wants it after it has been touched.

Why would someone do that? The nerve.

Joining the others who would instinctively take two pieces. It has nothing to do with being raised with manners..

ETA- what size was the pizza? A large cut into six pieces would give pretty large pieces BUT otoh, it’s Dominos and that’s such a wimpy pizza as it is.

Don’t mind me as I argue with myself lol

Sure it does;). :lmao:

I could see people taking 2 slices if it were pizza ordered for a meal. But this was just something I did because I wanted pizza (ok, I wanted diet coke) and I wanted to share. Think of it like someone sharing their lunch. Everyone should have their own lunch, this was an extra treat for everyone.

I think I was just surprised, like a PP said, that she continued to take the 2nd slice as I was telling her I wanted to make sure everyone got 1 slice before people had a second slice.

Sorry, I don't see the big deal either. Two slices would be a normal serving. Sure, some people would only take one, but that wouldn't be the norm.

Given these circumstances, I would not presume to take 2 slices. If it was a meal ordered for everyone then yes 2 slices would be the norm. However, if someone has a pizza they got for themselves and offers a slice and tells you only take 1, well then that seems a bit rude to take 2. I see your point, OP.

It was a meal ordered for everyone, the OP said she decided to order 2 pizzas to share.
She asked, and only ate 1 slice. I can see being mad if she still took 2 after you said 1, but she only took and ate one. You are making a mountain out of a molehill.

I can see the OP’s point, too. If I happen to run into someone carrying a pizza pie and they offer me a slice there is no way I’m trying to take two. Just like if somebody buys a bag of chips from a vending machine and offers me a chip I wouldn’t take the whole bag even though that’s the typical serving size.

I would not have taken two slices of a pizza offered to me. It's rude to continue taking a second slice after being told one per person. I can't imagine grabbing two slices of someone's personal pizza when offered a slice. This isn't a party or shared office lunch. However, I'd shake off the irritation and move on quickly.

If someone at work offers you a home baked cookie do you stick your hand in and take two?

Having kids and working with kids who haven't learned social graces of food sharing, I have learned that if I can't be a generous giver without strings attached when regards to food, then I shouldn't offer food.

I realize op was making a nice gesture out of her pocket, but it could have just been I bought pizza and when it's gone, it's gone without policing co workers to take only one slice. Or walk around and hand one slice to each person.Or buy only for yourself if what others do will bother you.

The difference is you are talking about children but the OP is discussing working adults who we'd like to believe did learn the social graces of food sharing.
