OMG! Received a beneficiary letter!

It sounds fishy to me because unclaimed funds are escheated to the state generally within 10 years and lately I have seen them escheating within 5 years. This is a long time for them to be looking for him & they are just getting to him under the wire? If they kne the aunt was deceased, why does he need to submit a COPY of the death certificate? And what info are they looking for? In today's age of stolen identities, I would really take the extra step to check this all out before giving out personal information.

They may have only recently discovered that she was deceased, so they may not have actually been looking for him for the past 10 years. Perhaps they had tried to send her correspondence regarding her policy and it came back as undeliverable - their first steps would then most likely have been to attempt to locate her - assuming an address change or something. In attempting to locate her, they may have found information indicating that she was deceased. However, they still need the death cert. for their records. I don't think this sounds far fetched at all.

Well, we JUST went through this in June!!!!! GMIL passed away 6/26/07. This June a company contacted the attny for her estate saying they had found new funds (life insuarance policies) she had set up and etc.

Just got our check on Friday - $7K.

I think yours is legit, too...

They would need a copy of the death certificate because it may make a difference in the amount of money they have to pay out. For instance if she died by accident or if she was killed by fault of her own like drinking and driving for instance. It would be standard proceedure whether she was 25 or 85.

Here's an update. I called directly to MetLife and YES it is legit! I used a different number on their website and they directed me to the department that handles this and the person I spoke to gave me the exact information I received on Friday. Also, the person I spoke to on Friday misunderstood what I was asking (about getting additional infor) and when he said he would send us information, it was the claim form so we could get it released. (It was hard to understand him so I imagine it was hard to understand me). They cannot give you information without the claim form. So I got a copy of the death certificate today and am anticipating mailing it in tomorrow. (I even tried a different way of asking about the policies to maybe 'trick' him into giving me some additional info. Didn't work.) Oh well, it will be like Christmas at our house in a couple of weeks no matter what the amount is! 'll keep you all posted! You know it's funny. I pray everyday, but for some reason I've found myself sending extra ones her way. Almost like she knew we needed it.

sounds to me like it is legit! mil passed away early this yr and we had no idea for a long time how much the policy was ... we also had someone contact us just a month or so ago telling us she had a policy with them. we even tried to ask well, how are we suppose to know how we want the $$ (lump sum or payments) if we don't know what amount we are talking about! and nothing worked until they were ready to tell us! good luck!

Odd that I read this thread yesterday because today a gentleman came in to our local Red Cross office trying to hunt down an heir for someone. The 'heir' had been military but moved and didn't keep up with the family. He knew Red Cross worked with military families and thought we could help.

Dont get too happy, I had the same thing happen to me with my father with the same exact company. Guess what the amount was that i got? $0 They needed teh death certificate to disburse the funds. I paid $25 for NOTHING. boy was i angry!!!!

I don't understand the last poster. Did you send in the death certificate just for their benefit? Who were they disbursing the $ to and what kind of policy was it? DH's aunt had 2 different ones.
