How idiotic of him surely he must have realised it would travel further than his side of the fence He could have warned you the day before either by popping a note through your door or by knocking and asking if it was convenient for you (with a small baby I doubt it would have been anyway). The sheer ignorance of some really irritates me.
I agree with some of the others.. get him to pay for the ruined items if it will not come out. Don't let him get away with this or it could just be the tip of the iceberg in future and you don't need the hassle or the extra expense of replacing clothing.

got them out of the washing machine and there still covered in it..

If I had done this, I would immediately offer to pay to replace the clothes. If he is not forthcoming, you could suggest he claims on his house insurance. I think that's only fair.

Good luck. If he is married, his wife might be a little more amenable. I can imagine my DH being mortified and apologetic but not having the sense to offer cash.
